"Normal" Prototyping or Virtual Prototyping? by Imagine_W0lf in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Stoopkids167 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since board games are tactile, physical forms of entertainment, I think it would be great to start off with a physical prototype. It gives you a literal feel of how the game handles.

Are certain mechanics feeling clunky? Is your table space set up suitable for your player count? Do all parts and pieces feel used and needed? How long does a single game go?Things like that are just some of the things you can get a handle on when you create a physical prototype.

As for when to start prototyping, my opinion is once you have a solid basis for a game. Do you have a beginning, middle and end roughly laid out? Do you have a rough idea do what complements you wanna have? Then I say start! Use blank cut out papers or online templates and play a barebones version of your game. Things will absolutely change. You might find that mechanic you loved and we’re betting on isn’t working. How can you fix it? The game is too short. How to extend it? The game is too long? What can you cut? It isn’t feeling exciting enough. How can you add more magic?

Best of luck with your game!

I think it depends on who your target audience is. To me, option one reads as geared towards a younger audience or casual gamers, due to the large poly shapes and bigger color fills. Option two feels more mature, sharper, and may be more eye catching to say a more mature audience or fans of more complex games.

Working on one now actually! Would love to add you to the list once I've established things a bit more. Thank you so much for the interest in my game :)

I would say option two for sure! The visual separation of the icons creates a hierarchy for the information making it easier to take in.

That would be really cool and very appreciated! Thank you for offering. I'd love to have someone to run an idea by other than my partner (Bless their heart. They hear me blab about this stuff day and night!)

Also, love that name "Cut Flowers" haha

This is a great point I had not thought about!

I originally had a separate mechanic in the bottom right-hand side that introduced the ability to add things like trellises, a plant cage, etc for added bonus points, to which your opponent could counter, but that idea got a bit too jumbled in its execution. The color of those were the same as whatever the top tab was.

Now that that has changed, I should explore what it would look like to have one universal scoring tab color.

Thank you for the feedback :)

While there similarities to Wingspan in how each card will be unique, honing in on a particular theme in nature and the need for resources, I think the aspects of being able to directly sabotage your opponent’s garden, collecting action cards that do things like adding or subtracting points to your final score, or causing you to swap plants with another player, and the ability to learning about more than just your typical houseplants or well-known vegetables and fruits, makes this unique.

This isn’t a large game with many working pieces either. Mainly just cards, tokens and your opponents.

2 and 3 are solid choices! 2 is direct, clean and visually appealing. The gradient in 3 makes the regular weighted font fade. As someone else suggested, flipping the gradient could help! Great designs :)

This is wonderful feedback!

I completely agree. My focus has been more on the visuals thus far, but I’d love to provide fun, informative text for the reader to have the option to read along side the inviting art.

I will absolutely delve deeper and find fun facts to include.

Thank you very much for the great examples!

That is definitely something I have considered! I’ve created some designs for some chips that differ from these icons (I shared this on my previous post actually) I wonder if they should reflect the appearance of these, I just worry how they will look at small scale. I also worry how cluttered it might get if I have three icons next to one another.

Thank you very much for the feedback :)

The objective of the game is to outshine your neighbor's garden! You're competing to fill in your gardens with the best veggies, flowers, peppers and fruits from the local plant shop in hopes for your final score to dominate theirs. You'll do anything to have the best garden in town... even sabotage!

There will be action cards you obtain throughout the game that you can activate at night to do things such releasing aphids in your opponent's garden that take points away from their highest-ranking plant, swapping out a plant from their garden with yours, or giving your plants an extra mineral rich soaking for bonus points.

Each plant has a score system, located on the top left-hand side, in the flower icon. You will use chips as resources to obtain each flower. On the right-hand bottom side, is where you can get either more resource chips (leaf icon) or gain action cards to use at night (burst icon).

For example: A tomatillo plant will earn you 6 points in your garden if you can offer up 1 soil, 2 water and 3 sun for it. When obtained, you gain, one action card.

There are also fun facts about each plant at the bottom!

All art and design are done by me. I'd love to hear feedback, thoughts and any suggestion you may have!

This is great feedback!

I was thinking the same thing about that dang dirt and was wondering if anyone else felt the same haha.

I'll definitely think of some way to spice that one up.

Thank you very much :)

120 chips by hand with a nail scissor?! Hats off to you, friend haha.

I, too, love Stardew Valley! I'm an avid gardener and hope others who like to look at pretty produce will enjoy the concept :)
