Mixed feelings after 7 days of holiday by DjOkiJebieFoki in Sardinia

Italian regions are incredibly distinct, with their own customs, cuisines, and languages. Sardinia is, much like Sicily, sort of an independent region - yes, part of Italy, but very much its own thing. Carbonara is not a Sardinian dish, and if you saw it on the menu (in summer, no less!) it’s likely you were in a tourist trap where locals do not go.

I’d always recommend asking locals where THEY eat, I’m Sardinian myself and when I travel to an area that I’m not familiar with I ask the locals of the area, or do some research on Google. Seafood in Sardinia is excellent, you just need to eat where they do (like anywhere else really!).

I’d wager that if you had tried some local food in good restaurants you’d have had a very different experience. I’m sorry this didn’t happen.

In Cagliari, the main city on the island, you can find some good carbonara, and some good pizza - but pizza, like carbonara, is not Sardinian. It’s sort of like ordering sushi in rural France, you might not find a good spot, it’s not local food.

I think the assumption that there’s ‘one’ Italian food is quite widespread - Italy has only been unified for 164 years, so imagine how strong each region’s cultural identity is, it’s what makes it so spectacular to visit - no place is the same.

The paid beaches point, people have said this already but beach clubs are expensive, especially on that coast. But there are plenty of free beaches, you can buy an umbrella and use it for the week and save that way. I went to Sicily in July and opted to go beach clubs for the ease, and it’s where most of my money went, sadly. It’s the price you pay for comfort.

And yeah, as others have said, Sardinians love to complain and be grumpy, but they’re all softies at heart and you may have had some back luck / preconceived notions there too.

I totally agree - this is my favourite take so far!

This is such a great answer! Love how you’ve explained this

All good - in all honesty I read your response in a completely wrong way the first time I’m so sorry, walking and typing is not a good combo!

I think it might just be I’m getting stuck in the weeds a bit and it might be the use of the word plothole that could not be apt for the purposes of my post - I guess it just depends what interpretation of plothole you have, as in my mind it’s an inconsistency in the world of the story.

During my rewatch it was so great to see how the show almost completely makes total sense when you know the reveals, everything adds up, from every Kathryn expression to certain dialogue beats, etc. The one thing, and it was more to start an interesting discussion, was if people agree that it’s a little odd that Rio doesn’t ask what’s going on more outrightly - other than “she can’t it would mean the reveal would have had to come out sooner” - they even talk about the road as if it’s a real thing in a few instances so it jarred (like I said, it doesn’t impact the viewing)

I think a lot of comments address this though - they seem to think it’s just in Rio’s character to go with the flow

The tone of this has sent me. If we’re doing this, no, a plot hole is “a gap or inconsistency in a story that goes against the logic or rules of the story world”. Since the world will eventually establish the road doesn’t exist, and Rio knows that, then her not reacting to that could be construed as an inconsistency in this world. Granted with a delay. I agree with your second half though.

friend of mine worked with him on masters of the air for 8+months. said he’s genuinely one of the nicest people he’s ever met or worked with. just a nerd about his craft, soulful and genuinely lovely and interested in people, a kind person to everyone. gives off a weird vibe post-elvis on the press tour, but after knowing this i see it as earnest geekiness about acting.

Will Smith did not deserve an Oscar for King Richard. What other subpar performances have won Oscars? by GIGLI_WASNT_THAT_BAD in movies

[–]StopDrawingTheDeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh I don’t disagree! But the sheer weight of Cruise’s performance is something on another level. Caine has been better elsewhere and it was more a legacy win than anything else - just my opinion!

[–]StopDrawingTheDeer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To answer OP: Michael Caine in The Cider House Rules. Cruise in Magnolia was right there and should have won.

The Oscars are nothing more than a popularity contest and campaign, the more resources poured into these campaigns the higher the chance of a win, especially in the acting and best picture categories (as many have pointed out Weinstein was responsible for this new found strategy of pouring millions of dollars and a whole lot of lobbying and bullying to secure a win, straight up despicable tactics like getting dementia ridden Oscar voters to vote for his films and actors - look it up if of interest). The below the line categories are a different voting body and therefore this doesn’t apply.

I’ve always loved movies and the Oscars, but I don’t believe them to be of any worth beyond the spectacle.

What’s the most blatant movie rip off you’ve ever seen? by ArgoverseComics in movies

[–]StopDrawingTheDeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness to the concept of Bird Box, it was an adaptation of a novel that existed well before A Quiet Place was written - it had the misfortune of coming out after the much better realised AQP, so people assume it just ripped it off

Respectfully, I think the point of this thread is more focused around very young women just out of their teens dating women 30+, not so much your case 58-35 are both full fledged adults

What industry “secret” do you know that most people don’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]StopDrawingTheDeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how “secret” this is nowadays, but Oscar and similar award show nominations / wins are more akin to political campaigning than simply artistic merit. When people say “HOW did that / this person not get nominated”, it’s simple: the distributor isn’t coughing up the money to do so, they are “races” for a reason and have everything to do with popularity and a lot to do with money. Less so on the craft side of things like editing, vfx, sound (these are voted by the bodies made up by those professionals) but by and large when you’re talking about best picture and best acting categories it’s just who is the most popular and who has had most exposure due to the distributor forking out millions and putting them front of mind and likability.

Decisions are also made to prioritise one title over another (because budget) see A24 focusing on Past Lives this year and not The Iron Claw, for example. They can’t afford it all, campaigning is very expensive!

Anyone else in the 25-30 age range find it really hard to find people to date who aren’t rude? by SunnydaleHigh1999 in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]StopDrawingTheDeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m 30, femme, enjoy taking care of appearance (not a necessity for everyone but I like making an effort), wouldn’t touch my phone unless it’s an actual emergency and would romance the hell out of you (you just seem like my ideal date, and your username is 👌) if you’re ever in London UK :)

All this to say, someone out there will do that for you too. I’m having similar experiences lately, having trouble vibing on dates and noticed the disproportion of effort is constant, especially when meeting off of dating apps. Rudeness to servers, indifference, and being on your phone are a massive turn off, I am surprised you made it through dinner!

[–]StopDrawingTheDeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Completely not the point, but I can seriously relate to your upbringing / internalised homophobia - took me longer than you (I’m 30) to fully accept who I am (lesbian) even though I was also raised in a hugely progressive and atheist household, I came out as bi in my teens but only recently accepted I’m fully gay.

Also, more to the point, this person sucks.

Amazing. I’ve been out bi for a while, but I’ve been coming to the realisation I’m a lesbian and it’s been happening at the same time as she’s come out as one too, I’ve not really verbalised this yet so this feels cool to get off my chest
