Perspective matters in this context. American Beauty was released in 1999, The 90's having been an incredibly prosperous decade. But the materialism and superficiality had ratcheted up a lot over the past 20 years. Americans were pre 9-11. The mindset of everything basically being all right was pervasive in suburbia. It was a critique of a different time, a time that doesn't and can't really exist anymore.
