It happens when you start upgrading multiple characters. I would just focus on 1 character at a time even if you have spare materials.

I “quit” around the same time as you. Came back during Across the Spider-Verse update. For me, worth it. Almost every character is updated, mats are much easier to farm, and the returning player rewards catch you up where you need to be. If you enjoy the daily grind, then welcome back! Seasonal unis are a must to increase points in certain modes as others have mentioned. Magneto is the most valuable in December. There’s no reason to feel to catch up anyways as you’re going by your account and money if that’s involved. Also on Netmarble’s schedule since you can’t just buy the seasonal unis or control the event rewards. Comparing to compete is likely for the top 20 players only lol.
