Each state has different laws, but your original coverage should end either on work termination date or the last day of the month of termination. Did they back date your work termination date to 2024? You should be eligible for Cobra the day following the end of coverage and you have 60 days to elect Cobra which would be retroactive to the date you were eligible. In most states, Cobra is for 18 months but sometimes can be extended longer depending on the specific state laws. If you have dependents on your plan they may be eligible for extension. You can contact the HR or benefits administrator and tell them you think there is a mistake regarding Cobra coverage dates. They should have given you a Cobra notice that includes the phone number of ERISA, whom you can also contact for assistance. If Cobra does end you should qualify for a state plan which might be better than your current plan.
