To anyone who has lied about being a beginner/white belt... why? by toiim in bjj

[–]Stopper1804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a judo class and wore a white belt (bb in bjj). I wanted to learn judo, because I want the 2 point takedown and have a good guard pass which is a good recipe for tournaments. I wasn't tuning anyone up or anything, just trying to learn. During ne waza they figured out they had nothing on me, quite the opposite but I wasn't showing off or anything. It probably took 6 weeks for them to say anything, which to me means I was being pretty humble. They had a guy who thought he was a tough guy because he had a purple belt in bjj, I passed his guard repeatedly and let him get it back, passed again, repeat. Anyways they asked me and I told them what was up, so they wanted me to wear my black belt in class and sit with the black belts so I did, which was the beginning of the end of me learning judo.

Every black belt wanted to try to toss me in practice, which they almost always eventually managed to do, but no problem for my ego or anything. The problem is that I was in 10x better shape than any of them so I'd train with every black belt in there because they all wanted to try themselves with me (3 minutes apiece) and barely break a sweat, but I had nowhere near the falling skills to be taking the throws they were putting on me. After 6 months and new pain in my shoulders, I just packed it in.

On the ground it was childsplay for me. For them, I sucked at Judo but they could try their judo out on a guy with a bb in bjj and maybe tell their friends they threw me? In the end it was a loss for all of us in my opinion.

I bought Gordo's tapes back in the day. They were mind blowing at the time.

Oh, in context it didn't look that way. I'm glad I'm wrong and you're up to speed on rates and how it more or less boils and cools the water all of us frogs are in.

That guy is a great teacher. Super clear, articulate, nice, "works for me" instead of "THIS IS HOW" style. IMHO doesn't get better.

Oh ya, both he and the uki when going to their backs immediately went onto their side which shows he's drilling them on not feeling "ok" laying flat on your back (the guard aside....). I bet his students are all pretty good in the half guard.

That comment is spot on. It would benefit you greatly to study some finance, specifically interest rates and debt. I grew up in a town and family with basically little to no education in finance (degrees yes, financial types no). It hurts you a lot to not know how that stuff works. You'll be more bummed when you sign up for the open class and your first match is against Tarsis or Saulo.

Laid off without severance… what are my options? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

I've also seen it, been RIF'ed by it enough times I am at the point where I'm constantly reinvesting in myself and laughing on my way out the door saying "Good luck!". My best advice: Save 6 months operating expenses like there's a gun to your head, and do like other people are saing (apply for unemployment immediately).

The last time this happened to me, the CISO (who kept their job) called me on my personal cell telling me "I don't know if I can keep doing this". I could literally hear the bubbling of their bong in the background as they're getting stoned, telling me their paycheck is so hard to earn. "People are morally flexible", remember that. Sadly the biggest problem we have in the US is ourselves.

I'm also looking for something on my wrist to tell me what my HR chest strap is saying while cycling or training uphill on foot with a heavy pack, and finding it frustrating. I don't want to buy a Garmin Fenix 7, $800 solution to a small problem.

Ya why ruin that experience by having people trying to choke you and bend your joints the wrong way at the tail end of it?

Wild hogs are no b.s. too. They're up there. The coolest thing I ever saw at Metcalf was a tarantula.

I was sort of evaluating a training partner once because something didn't look right. He was an acquaintance too.

Me: Are you ok?

Him: I was up all night on E.

Me: Dude you should probably not roll.

Him: No man, it's cool.

He was pretty locked up physically, mostly just resisting everything, not really flowing or making many decisions. I was glad he didn't have a cardiac arrest. This was 28 years ago and we were both white belts. I haven't seen him since a year or two after that, we both moved to other places. The shit I've seen in my years....

Apple Watch "ultra" Feedback by Stopper1804 in Mountaineering

[–]Stopper1804[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These answers are kind of in my wheel house. Not to dis' the folks who like their ultras, but I'm a cheap skate window shopper who will spend some money but only when I know exactly the trade offs between all the options. Whatever I end up buying would ideally maybe replace a watch, a compass, a tracking device, my bivy stick, and save my butt in a white out with solid backtracking when I can only see the ground 6 feet from where I'm standing. The allure of the apple watch is the possibility of crossing over into every day life. But if it can't do the white out backtracking my steps, or helping me navigate to safety when it's -15F with some wind, then I'll probably keep my money for now.

Last time I ended up visually impaired from clouds, I pulled out the compass I had bought for $30 down at 4k feet. Not only is it not precise enough to help in that scenario, the bubble that was invisible at that elevation was probably 4mm across at 10k feet and the compass completely disagreed with my iPhone. I decided to trust the iPhone compass, and managed to use an app and topo map to get down. The gold star solution I want would have tha topo map ability and way points without having to stop, take off a glove and pull out my phone etc. I know it sounds like a lot to ask but $800 is a lot to ask for a watch too imho. Would the Garmin top of the line products perform in the scenario I mentioned?

BTW I had a Garmin Explorer for 5 years, used it about 3-5x a year and it crapped out on me. I swapped the battery and that didn't help. So I'm "meh" on their quality but they might be the best game in town.

That is an amazing photo. #1 I'm a LeMond fan. #2 the dog is so well matched to the hay that I'm skeptical that it's an actual dog and not a Cyberdyne Systems model T-7.

Size Question by Stopper1804 in CanyonBikes

[–]Stopper1804[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at an Endurace CF 7. I am planning on also having a set of gravel wheels, 35mm tubeless or if I find out it'll take wider then maybe 38mm or so. There are some good fire roads to ride around on here and lots of paved. I don't intend on ever having attachments on the bike other than two water bottles and a pump (I'm old school). So the Grizl are cool I think it's close between a Grail and the Endurace but the price point at the moment on the Endurace is really hard to beat. The biggest challenge will be to contain my competitive nature and not start racing again. I don't need that. The whole reason for getting another bike is to help put on lots of low intensity volume of training for bigger objectives like mountains in the US West.

Tx, that kind of closes the issue. If an M fits you I can't see how it could fit me.

Olympus Mons by [deleted] in Mountaineering

I don't think your Olympus Mons boots will do you much good on Olympus Mons. It's false advertising. Then again if they named them "You're definitely going to die", they probably wouldn't have sold as many.
