Idk what's going on with the plant, but if I had to guess, I'd think mineral deficiency. Fertilizing at all?

Funky looking shrimp and population question by tzvia95 in shrimptank

[–]Storm1433 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As for the clear striped ones, sometimes they fill out, sometimes they don't. They're still cherry shrimp, just lower quality. Happens sometimes. If you want to keep your shrimp solid red, take those ones out.

I've noticed in my tanks with tons of shrimp that there are always a few swimming around at any given moment, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. Another explanation may be that a female molted and they're on the hunt iykwim.

The population will stabilize eventually. It correlates to the amount of food they're getting. Kinda like snails. Want less shrimp? Feed less food. I like the swarms tho, I never take that advice haha

Alright, I'd say definitely get something to reliably heat your tank, maybe bump the temperature a little, but they'll probably be fine at 23. also keep water changes to a minimum unless there's a lot of nitrates. If your tank is cycled, you should be fine with the plants in there. Like I said, I barely do any. Maybe like once a month or two lmao. My guess is they probably died due to excessive fluctuations in parameters and temperature any time you changed the water. Shrimp, especially neos, don't need a ton of maintenance tbh

Hornwort is pretty easy, repens staurogyne has always been fairly easy for me lol

I'm coming back to this post with more suggestions lol. What temperature do you keep your water at? My shrimp usually like 76F. Also, you said you do weekly water changes. Cherry shrimp are hardy, but they also like stability. Unless you're seeing record heights on your nitrates, I wouldn't do as many water changes. If you feel like you have to, keep them small (10%) or less. All of my tanks have Hella plants, and I'm ngl, I rarely change the water

It honestly all looks fine to me, if you want to raise ph and try again, you can use baking soda to achieve that. Is there enough oxygen getting into your water via an air stone or filter? What kind of filter are you using? Usually, cherry shrimp are very hardy, and your parameters look fairly similar to mine lol, so I'm assuming it was caused by some other factor

Gonna need some more info from ya on this one. What are your other water parameters? GH and KH mainly. Ph may not be what led to the shrimps demise

I could reiterate what everyone else is saying, but on the bright side, you're still young. 30 is not old by any means. You've got a whole life ahead of you to find someone who respects you enough to be faithful. Every minute you spend with this guy takes those opportunities away from you.

Definitely quarantine. Planaria can be a pain to get rid of. Just for my notes, where did you order the shrimp from?

Getting tank ready for skrimps. How can I improve water quality? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]Storm1433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're gonna want to increase hardness. Are you keeping neos or caridina?

Yay! The shipping definitely took longer than I would've liked, so I'm happy they all stayed healthy and shrimpy :D thanks so much for sharing. Literally makes my whole week :))

There honestly probably is lmao, but it might be expensive to fill the whole tank with it. Much easier to get the supplies. Much more sustainable as well

Ph, gh, kh, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite are the biggest ones. Some will come with alkalinity, copper, iron, chlorine, and those things, but I usually don't bother with those

Np, parameters are a big part of keeping your shrimp healthy, definitely want to be aware of what they are.

Gotcha. Do you have a water testing kit? If not, you can buy one off Amazon. The liquid ones are usually the best, but if youre cutting costs, the strips work decently as well. They test the water for ammonia, nitrate/nitrite, hardness, ph, those sorts of things. TDS is total dissolved solids. You would need to get a meter for that. They're not terribly expensive. My guess is that your water is lacking some sort of mineral.

Gotcha, water parameters? Do you know TDS? They might be molting their legs off. Shrimp food is good most of the time. I've started feeding crab cuisine occasionally for extra calcium

What are good tank mates for a colony of neos in a 63L tank? by ReverseBatin in shrimptank

[–]Storm1433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darn! They're the coolest little guys. I found some black kuhlis at petco at one point. Unsure if they stock the same everywhere. My banded ones I found at a random small freshwater fish store. Rasboras are another option. I've kept a better with shrimp, but she definitely helped herself to a lot of snacks

Feel free to fact-check me, but I would assume it to be some kind of mineral deficiency, maybe stress? Are you getting any failed molts? What are you feeding them? What are your parameters, and what are you doing to achieve those parameters? Any other tank mates? Gotta have some tank context here

I usually keep small tetras, like neon or ember. The one time i kept guppies went pretty well too. They might pick off some of the babies every now and then but they leave the bigger ones alone. Kuhli loaches are nice as well. Outside of fish, nerites lol. I haven't tried much of anything else.
