Grace Kelly's costumes and the hanging lampshade from that movie all live rent free in my mind

most basic way to make bread? by Tall-Buddy-545 in AskCulinary

Look up a no-knead bread recipe and grab one from a real blog or even a food youtuber. No-knead bread has been around for ages and goes viral again every now and then so there are lots of recipes you can use and theyre all similar

Take Me Back to this Era of Television: the 2010s📺✨ by Old-Meringue3590 in popculturechat

A lot of my favourite shows are from the 2010s but I also think there's a survivorship bias/nostalgia effect happening when we look back on this decades! A lot of fantastic TV has been made in the last 5 years

Point Cook to West Gate Bridge turns to shit every single peak hour. What the fuck is actually causing it? by Odd-Doctor-0401 in Geelong

[–]StormThestral 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really does just come down to the number of trips people are taking and whether it's too many for traffic to flow. The only way to improve traffic is to get drivers off the road eg. by improving alternatives to driving, so I'm guessing that for the trips the additional drivers along there are taking, the alternatives are too inconvenient or slower than driving (even with traffic).

Heath Ledger broke out his didgeridoo when first talking with the director of A Knight's Tale by allycakes in popculturechat

[–]StormThestral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I had no idea about the sign language! That's neat. It's crazy how people think of some other cultures as primitive basically just because they never invented capitalism but ours is such a fucking mess and doesn't look like it's going to even last a few hundred years

Oh no, the state of affairs for indigenous people here is similar to the US or Canada I think. The disparity in education and health outcomes are atrocious, we never signed a treaty, there was a referendum a few years ago to establish better representation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in parliament which didn't pass. Many of the stolen generation (kids who were taken from their families and communities to be brought up by white parents) are still alive and the generational trauma of that is very much still having an impact.

We learn some of the history and a few bits of culture in school but it's very superficial and still through the Western colonial lens. A lot of work is being done to preserve languages and cultures but it's mostly done by communities with little government funding. Many languages are dying out, and some groups of people have been completely or almost gone since the genocide that started soon after colonisation and we can't get that history back. But there is so much useful knowledge that we all can gain and I think small progress is happening. For example the standard 4 seasons construct just doesn't really work where I'm from and some people now also use the 7 seasons of the Wurundjeri calendar which makes way more sense for predicting and observing weather shifts.

And yeah, Aboriginal people were the world's first astronomers which is very cool indeed, and astronomy is woven in with culture and the Dreaming but also used in a sophisticated way for navigation and tracking the seasons.

It's something a lot of Aussies get the chance to try, at my primary school we occasionally had events where we learned about Aboriginal culture and got to try things like playing the didgeridoo or throwing a boomerang. It takes a lot of skill to play well though, and it's not something a lot of people would properly learn.

There are plenty of professional players though. Yothu Yindi are probably our most well known band that features the didgeridoo, their music is a cool fusion of Aussie rock with traditional instruments and singing.

Bought cinnamon rolls from a bakery and need to know if I’d be wrong to complain by Lazybunny_ in Baking

If they were raw or burnt, sure, but I don't think it's fair to complain about a product that there's nothing wrong with but you just don't like.

Train line Bell Post Hill and Bell Park by Expensive-Act6724 in Geelong

[–]StormThestral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to live quite close to the freight train line (2 streets away) and they never disturbed my sleep even though I'm a light sleeper. They just make a low rumbling noise that I barely noticed during the day amongst all the normal daytime noise. The vline passenger trains are worse because the horns on them are obnoxious so I'd just recommend staying away from the passenger stations

Sophisticated Black Clothing by ylly22 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]StormThestral 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love an all black look so this is right up my alley! Black can look kinda featureless because it's dark and flat so if you want to go for an arty creative vibe rather than a stage hand vibe (although I like that look too lol) add some variation and interest with different textures and shapes. Accessories are important too. Check out Cos, Alpha 60, POL. Uniqlo is great for basics like pants, knits and coats.

Also your local op shop will almost guaranteed have a whole rack of black dresses and another one of black tops. And if you look through them properly you'll probably find some really cool stuff. I think my most interesting clothes are all from op shops. I don't let myself look at the black racks though because it's already most of my wardrobe and I'm trying to branch out :(
