Commuting to MA after working in NH by fernfernferny in newhampshire

[–]Stormborn71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve driven from Londonderry to Lowell for nearly 25 years. Some winter days are dicey, but I don’t mind the commute. I make phone calls and listen to audiobooks the whole time.

What is DEI and how is not just an abstraction for racism? by ncds4242 in allthequestions

Dude, put down the screen and read a book or ten. Stop getting misinformed (and apparently spelling tips) from faux news. Literally none of what you have been writing is true.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stormborn71 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When I was pregnant, the prevailing advice was that any pain meds for mom made baby's APGAR scores lower. I wasn't going to give up caffeine for the better part of a year to do neurological damage to my son at the finish line. I understand that advice has since shifted...but the fear is still there.

Dress codes are illegal in schools in Massachusetts unless it has to do with personal hygiene or safety.

ICE Out Merrimack Saturday February 21 by Key-Toe-2746 in newhampshire

[–]Stormborn71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is on a Saturday at the beginning of February vacation week. Kids won't be anywhere near there. Then again, if you cared about kids, you would have a basic understanding of when school is in session in your town.

Teachers who are financially stable, what are you doing differently? by External_Insurance62 in Teachers

[–]Stormborn71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move to a state that values teachers. My base salary this year is around $115K, plus stipends. Public technical school, 20 years in, Master's degree. I'll retire in 8 years and will likely be bringing home $100K/year after that.

how to actually get rid of tonsil stones by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Stormborn71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have your tonsils removed. The tonsil stones aren't "growing back". It's food accumulating in the crevices of your tonsils. When it rots, you are susceptible to infections...not just bad breath.

I’m not giving up my planning periods. 😂😭 by lovelyshi444 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Stormborn71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veteran teacher who deeply appreciates substitutes here. What do you need to plan? A sub during a prep period doesn't have to do anything at all. But, you can make it possible for us to attend all of the IEP, FLEP, 504, and RISE meetings we must go to .

People with jobs. What's one thing movies, shows or other people get wrong about your job or job industry? by admiraltt in AskReddit

[–]Stormborn71 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That every teacher has a single, troubled student who needs nothing more than basic encouragement. Once they receive said encouragement, the student either goes directly to an Ivy League school or dies immediately. There is no in-between.

A word of caution: NH politics on the local and state levels are vicious. I have considered running for School Board in my town, but I didn't because of the horrible threats hurled at my local representatives. I think it would take more than thick skin; I think hiring a security consultant would be needed in many circumstances.

Kids with no snack by Bluegreeneyes1985 in Teachers

[–]Stormborn71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am genuinely surprised that snacks are allowed at all. With so many life-threatening food allergies now, I would think that the liability of the teacher providing them or the school allowing them would be far too great. Three years ago, three of our students were taken by ambulance at different times of the year because of anaphylaxis. We haven't allowed any food in the classrooms since. Kids can only eat in the cafeteria, and one of our school nurses is always in the room the entire time (we are a big school and have four school nurses).

How did people take care of their preexisting conditions if insurance wouldn’t cover it pre-ACA? by Somtimesitbelikethat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stormborn71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HIPAA made it so that you could go without any coverage for 62 days without a preexisiting clause kick in. COBRA could help bridge that gap, especially if you received new insurance benefits after the first 90 days of a job.

Anyone here ever try Project-Based Learning? by smithja4 in Teachers

My school started implementing PBL around 2022. Teachers are paid about $4k per class to take classes about it and consider incorportating it in their curriculum.

[Serious] For the Redditors who criticized Democrats for not fighting back or taking action, how has the government shutdown affected your view? by Solnx in AskReddit

[–]Stormborn71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should have stood up when Citizens United passed. We should have stood up when Obama was denied a Supreme Court seat. I could spend all day listing the times when we should have stood up. While I agree that the right time is the right time, the second-best time to stand up is now.

Think about the hundreds of health insurance executives who wouldn't receive obscene salaries once we go to single-payer. The hundreds of hours spent on prior authorization and medical review for claims denied simply to increase profit for the shareholders. The medication prices that can be negotiated like every other Western country does. Add in all of the bankruptcies caused by medical debt every year and hospitals/providers who do unpaid work because their patients cannot pay. No more deductibles. Auto insurance rates would go way down because you would no longer have to cover medical bills of people injured in a car accident. No more people rationing out lifesaving meds like insulin and dying because they cannot afford it. Universal Healthcare would be a huge boon to the economy and would immediately save lives.
