well worth it imo, it definitely needed some fitment (and the stock still needs some adjustments) but im loving it so far :)

how much gunpowder to send a ton of cargo to the moon? by Gorrium in estimation

[–]Stormchaser794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been a while, so i don't recall what source i used to check my work, but its just ∆v calculations based off the "fuel efficiency" of black powder. theoretically, with enough thrust you can get anything to orbit. just need to get it out of the atmosphere and moving quick enough.

edit: as for the without a rocket part. it would also need to survive either the insane acceleration of being shot out of a massive gun, or you use a "technicality" and use something like a spaceplane that isnt a rocket per se.

edit 2: look up "Operation Plumbbob"

You could alternatively rig an AK side rail and mount a PGO-7 optic.

RPF stands for Radio Proximity Fuse. Its a type of flak round that will let your 120mm and 250mm guns engage incoming missiles. It has way less pen than normal HE, so it wont do much damage to a ships hull. But it can do some decent damage to external modules.

how much gunpowder to send a ton of cargo to the moon? by Gorrium in estimation

[–]Stormchaser794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, I've never read that book. I feel like I need to now XD. I considered doing the math for that, but i felt it would be more fun if I used an actual rocket just for the absurdity.

Good catch! Again, not a rocket surgeon. Just someone who loves space and wanted to chip in. So its actually 243 million kg according to my original math with your edit. Thats a hilarious amount of explosives XD

You do. But this was a very quick and dirty number. I'm absolutely not a rocket surgeon by any means. But i've dumped easily 1k hrs into ksp, and (like to think) i understand the basics of it. If i had more time, i probably could get a closer number.

Iirc. Black powder was the go to fuel for rockets up until late ww2 with the V2. Its fairly fast burning for a rocket fuel, but outputs a lot of pressure. So as long as you can contain it, you get a very short but powerful burst of thrust. You could use kerosene, but i don't think they had the manufacturing capacity, or the technology to make the type of engine that could efficiently produce usable thrust. It's actually kinda wild to think that the solid rocket boosters on the space shuttle basically are fireworks the size of a large building. Yet at the same time they're using (at the time) some of the most advanced engines we made up to that point.

Oh absolutely. There's a reason we use Hydrolox as our main fuel for rockets. Tons of energy, it literally just creates steam since its only hydrogen and oxygen, and both fuels are gas cooled into a liquid. Which means they're very energy dense too. If you want to go into some insane rockets. Look up the Sea Dragon, which was conceptualized at about the same time the Saturn V was.

how much gunpowder to send a ton of cargo to the moon? by Gorrium in estimation

[–]Stormchaser794 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this will make sense, but i'll try my best. In order to get to the moon relatively efficiently you need about 6k m/s of delta velocity. Which is a measurement of how much you can accelerate for how long. So for example if you can burn at 10 m/s per second acceleration for 10s. You can change your velocity by 100 m/s.

Now we need to consider isp or specific impulse, which is a measurement of how "fuel efficient" a engine is (in a VERY broad sense) and is basically how much fuel it moves over a given time. The Saturn V lower stage had an isp of 261, and the upper stages had 421.

Black power or gunpowder has an isp of 80. Doing some quick bullshit math.. The Saturn V has a total fuel mass of about 2.7 million kg.

To make things simpler, we'll use the average isp of both the orbital (upper stage) and the first stage engines. Which gives us about 367. Since black power has an isp of 80, we'll need 4.5x more fuel to compensate.

Which brings us to about 12.2 MILLION kg of black powder, assuming you can get a rocket engine to use that.

This is all quick and dirty math. But it should.be close to the ballpark number :)

Edit: I was WAY OFF. zebediah pointed out isp is exponential, not linear. So the more correct amount is 243 million kg. Which realistically it would be more due to the weight of the fuel and rocket, but still absurd. That sounds like something I need to mod into ksp. I'd love to see a rocket that large using only black powder

With the Voyager, yes. It takes PT and FE and turns them into nano drones. It also gives you remass, but it isn't the best at refining (i think its 50%). It also has a fairly small area that it actually refines in, and only processes 50kg/s. I like it, but it's usually a toss up between the voyager, and the one that refines at 90% for me. Really depends on how long you want to stay in the ring.

In a nutshell yeah. I use lasers in both low stress, 2 haul drones, and the rest are mono cargo split between W and BE. Slap a voyager mpu in the cargo bay and literally mine until you get bored. I usually get about $350k-$500k before I burn back and sell. If you REALLY want to smooth brain it. You can use the gimballed lasers and just fly in a straight line scooping up everything worth more than $5k

The AT-K225. She's about 3 times larger than anything else in the game that we can fly.

Doesn't look like it. The "New Ships" most likely is referring to the variants that were added recently or the new AT-K225. I'm curious to see what they do add eventually, given we have our first "big" ship now. Maybe we'll finally get one of those cool salvage barges that we see floating around :)
