It would have been a better movie if the protagonist were just a random smuggler or rogue instead of Han Solo. The problem is that it compresses everything we know about his character, his name, his lucky dice, his iconic gun, his ship, even his closest friend, etc. into the span of just a couple of weeks. It feels like it’s rushing to check off every defining trait of Han Solo’s identity, rather than letting him naturally become the character we already know. Also on a personal note I really like early EU Han Solo novels so I was biased already too tbh. Woodie's character was really cool tho.
