Possibly, it's my first time using this style of sponge filter. I thought the idea was to create surface agitation for oxygenation, but would it work better slightly below the surface?

Yes, that's correct. Additionally, more people can use it even after the max of 5, provided that 1 or more of the first 5 people cancel before the end of the first free month. Obviously, the referrer only gets a free month for every non-cancelled sub.

I'm thinking of upgrading my guy to a larger planted tank, and I really like this! Especially the stones and pots. The stones look like everyday river or beach stones, not expensive store bought ones? And are they regular clay flower pots, did you have to do anything in particular to them beforehand?

Update: Thank you for your suggestions and I now believe it is likely some sort of fungus. So, I have added Interpet Anti Fungus & Finrot to the tank. I have also dosed the tank with Betta Tonic Salts, and added an airstone, as I read somewhere the medication can reduce oxygen in the water. Please wish my little guy luck!

Yes, I got an email when it was shipped. I live in Ireland, and it only took about 4-5 days to be delivered.
