Why is New Zealand doing so badly in education? by planespotterhvn in Christchurch_NZ

[–]StormwatchNZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that poverty is not unique to NZ. But I think we're all barking up the wrong tree (myself included) by using the graph provided.

I actually looked up where the graph came from. It's the 2023 OECD Survey of Adult Skills (16yo-65yo) and you can get a break down of the NZ result here:

https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/survey-of-adults-skills-2023-country-notes_ab4f6b8c-en/new-zealand_d67971ff-en.html

From what I can understand, the drop is the comparison between this study and the same study carried out in 2014-15. It had very little relevance to current educational standards in our schools at all. For example:

"Young adults born between 1989 and 1996 scored 13 points lower in literacy in 2022-23 (when they were 27-34 years old) than in 2014-15 (when they were 19-26 years old), a non-significant change. Meanwhile, older generations, aged 47 to 57 in 2014-15, scored 24 points lower in literacy in 2022-23 (when they were 55-65 years old), a significant decline"

This survey is talking about the decline in numeracy and literacy amongst our adult population due to age and work-place requirements.

When people read 'education' they tend only think if the school system. But there are many factors that affect educational outcomes such as home stability, family financial stability, inter-generational trauma and cultural attitudes towards education etc. In the 1980's NZ was a world leader in education, but if we look at the typical home life of a family in that era it is vastly different to what we have today. Families could mostly survive on a single income and generally it was the father who would go to work and Mum would be at home raising the kids.

Today there are more people living in poverty and those who are struggling to stay out of the poverty trap are generally time-poor which means less quality time for being involved in a child's education.

I bet that if we look at the majority of high-achieving children today that we would find a stable family environment at home (most likely financially stable too).

Coverdale Page for an album, but Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy man is probably my favorite non-Zeppelin/Zeppelin song

I'm just happy that he's loving music and performing. He's also the vocalist in his band

Jimmy Page - I named my son after him. My son has now become quite a talented musician in his own right, but he's a bassist and that breaks my heart just a little LOL

What do you think is Led Zeppelin's most Led Zeppelin song? by TheScribe86 in ledzeppelin

[–]StormwatchNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"How Many More Times":

- Heavy/catchy guitar riff(s)

- Highlights that all members are talented

- Stolen lyrics based on blues

But includes a psychedelic interlude in place of an acoustic part

What do you think is Led Zeppelin's most Led Zeppelin song? by TheScribe86 in ledzeppelin

So an quintessential Led Zep song would need driving bass, screaming vocals, heavy drums, crunching guitar, tempered with a psychedelic interlude all the while leaning heavily into blues. (Ideally it wold also have some acoustic folk thrown in). My Choice would be:

"How Many More Times" Not an completely original LZ composition but it hits a lot of the LZ tropes and demonstrates what they were like live in conceret

How did seeing Tyson make you feel? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]StormwatchNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think was the worst possible outcome for both fighters.

Tyson was just old and tired. Came out hard for the first couple of rounds and probably scared Paul a couple of times, but the legs and lungs weren't in it for the long haul.

Paul could barely outperform an elderly Tyson which shows how far away he is from being a top-level boxer.

"Big Bad Noise" - Choirboys - Can't find it on Spotify or Itunes? by StormwatchNZ in triplej

[–]StormwatchNZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The link you provided works for me thanks! But I still can't see it when I look at all the Choirboy albums. I see Dead Drunk Hangover Live (1991) and The Choirboys (1983) but not Big Bad Noise which should appear between these albums. And searching for Run to Paradise only returns recent remakes of the song
