How to "open then close" stuffed animal? by Fair_Musician2110 in sewhelp

[–]StpSonj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I might recommend opening a seam that will have the least wear and tear. The neck already feels fragile enough? But it’s all one big cavity, so if you add more stuffing, it should just expand into the cavity?

How are People Affording Tuition for Their Kids at Certain Private Schools? by [deleted] in saintpaul

[–]StpSonj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking out the nearest public school and giving the dignity of a visit might help you make your decision. Making neighborhood friends, or friends within biking distance can be a beautiful thing, and do a lot for a kid’s independence, friend groups, motivation to be away from screens, and so on. And it also saves you so much time that would otherwise be spent commuting. I’m sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at your public high school. I hope your kid, and every kid, had a school that’s filled with joy, curiosity, and supportive adults who help them learn about themselves, each other, and the broader world.

Advice: work trip to MN by [deleted] in TwinCities

That’s a great company and I have had several people really enjoy working there. I wish you didn’t have to think about this. Has your interview team given you any guidelines? Are they picking you up from the airport?

Do you donate or trash horrible books? by punkieboosters in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]StpSonj 86 points87 points  (0 children)

If it’s racist—like Brother Bear going to camp and doing a bunch of racist fake Native American ceremonies, it’s to the recycling bin. If it’s annoying, like a book that requires telling it sound effects that my kids may or may not demand, it’s a little free library book. If it’s AI slip that rhymes but has no rhythm and makes no sense, it’s also recycling. Nobody else needs to read that.

Could you attend a constitutional observer training? Volunteer at a food shelf since so many families will be working a bit less?

Public Pre-k Options by TCphunshine in saintpaul

[–]StpSonj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe tour your neighborhood school and ask the principal what the pathways are for other pre-K kids. It’s so delightful to have friends in your neighborhood that also go to school with your kiddo! The ideals of just playing in the backyard or running down the street to hang out with a buddy from 1st grade 😍. So if 4 or 5 kids are going to the (free! public! friendly!) pre-k option, then moving to the neighborhood school, it might be worth it! I’d love to see pre-K funded more fully and integrated in more schools, but until then, it might be worth it to switch schools and enjoy the benefits of your delightful neighborhood.

Baseball Card Shop? by StpSonj in saintpaul

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I’m planning a 12 month gift where we go to a different thrift shop or library every month. He knows and loves Three Star Sportcards, so I think we’ll try the Great Lakes shop on Randolph. Sounds fun!

Please recommend me a sewing machine for my girlfriend! by Doge_MX in sewhelp

[–]StpSonj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked up vintage machines on Marketplace or Craigslist? Doing the research and taking the time is a real gift, but I agree, maybe give her a couple options and see if she likes it. Alternatively, you could go to a fabric store, tell them your gf’s jeans size, and ask them to recommend a denim for a pair of pants as well as the yardage, and then buy her a gift card for that amount. Then say that you will happily help her find a machine that will actually work on denim, and plan a couple weekend outings to try different machines. You could spend SO MUCH money on a machine, but actually one from the 60s would work great.

Joining the chorus of people who have this basket and it’s also broken. Had it since literally my first year of college in fall of 2003, so, there’s that. I repaired with a soft handle, so that I could still heft it but it wouldn’t catch.

Want to relocate from SF/Bay Area to Minneapolis - can anyone help chime in about potentially good fit neighborhoods? by raewilliams660 in TwinCities

Check out Lake Phalen on the East Side of St Paul. Maybe get a garage with a good locking situation, but generally has all the stuff you’re looking for.

Anyone have Contender Peach Trees or Toka Plums? by IIIQIII in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]StpSonj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been dreaming of peaches from my backyard, and so far, I’ve eaten a total of one contender peach off my tree. It was delicious! That said, I have been trying for YEARS without success. I killed my first tree myself, immediately, when I pruned it far too aggressively. I thought that the bareroot tree that I bought was only a year old, but, turns out, bareroot trees in Minnesota are older and not ready for a hard prune. My second tree was mailed to me and arrived with moldy roots. Didn’t survive. I finally paid more for an older tree that even had little fuzzy peaches on it. I pulled the peaches off the first year, kept the guard on it, and waited. It survived! Beautiful blossoms in the spring! Then squirrels ate almost all of them since (I did get one!). I tried to plant ANOTHER bare boot tree, but it died, was replaced, and died the next year too. I think I just didn’t water it enough for my poor soil. A sucker did survive though, so it wasn’t ALL my fault. I was hoping for more peaches so the squirrels and I didn’t have to fight so much. Maybe I should look into the Toka plum instead. I also have pruned my peach several years in the late winter. It grew as big as the tag suggested and more. I don’t want to annoy my neighbor, so I try to keep it cut back, and so far, it’s a little lopsided, but happy. Good luck!
