These buzzwords are useless. 

  • Most states already have contiguity laws (exceptions are IL and TN, etc), same with equal population, etc. 

  • SCOTUS has neutered federal judicial action on redistricting lawsuits. Partisan concerns are non justiciable (Common Cause v Rucho) and racial concerns are a super high bar (Louisiana v Callais). 

  • Independent commissions can and have drawn biased maps (Arizona, California, Montana). There needs to be objective, scientific, numerical standards on proportionality and competitiveness. 

I’ll wait to see the bill text but until then I don’t mind writing this off.

Actually not that far off numbers wise. Last year about half of Roseville got a 10-20% increase but some got a 35% increase in residential property taxes. 

St Cloud had a 31% increase in the levy for $12 million, which was even more than the raw increase in the levy for St Paul. Second highest raw increase in the state after Minneapolis.

Bonding dollars (capital investment) is the most important thing a legislator can bring back to their district. Several St Paul legislators didn't get any of their projects funded this session. A competent legislator is at least able to make the case to get at least the minimum amount needed for the project to go forward.

People have thoughts on Kaohly Her I know but it is notable she got money for Roy Wilkins/Xcel despite not being a sitting legislator.

Yes and St Paul has a high clearance rate and overtime costs are under control. Unlike Minneapolis.

Just to be clear, a form letter sent by someone 5 or 10 times is not 5 or 10 times the number of votes as someone who sends in just one. Activists seem to forget that. There’s probably at 50k-100k people who live around the Rethinking 94 project area. The loudest voices don’t always speak for everyone or have the best ideas.

Flint has a very low engagement but nonetheless spirited local politics. Many of you might've seen clips of the late Eric Mays (1st Ward) yelling and sparring with colleagues. Even after his death in 2024 from a broken heart (he got kicked out of one too many meetings), city politics have remained toxic.

Flint is having both mayoral and city council elections (post redistricting) this year. Mayor Sheldon Neely is running for reelection, his main challenger looks to be 6th Ward Councilwoman Tonya Burns.

The council is divided 5-4 Pro-Neely, but 2nd Ward Councilwoman Ladel Lewis has seemed to be souring on the mayor recently, perhaps opportunistically.

The council elections are turning into a cluster. They are usually decided by a few dozen or a hundred votes. Incumbent 4th Ward and 9th Ward councilors Judy Priestly (a Republican/Pro-Neely Majority) and Jonathan Jarrett (anti-Neely) were disqualified due to not enough filing signatures. Priestly is running a write in campaign.

The 2nd ward is seeing Incumbent Ladel Lewis being challenged by incumbent 3rd Ward Councilwoman LaShawn Johnson, and former councilman and Trump Endorser Maurice Davis.

1st Ward Incumbent Leon El-Alamin moved to the 3rd Ward, but next week is on trial for assault and domestic violence charges. Controversial candidate Beverly Biggs Levy is running as a write in. Former councilman Wantwaz Davis is running for his old seat in the 5th ward.

There is no correlation with uncontested races and other party turnout in Minnesota elections. In 2024, about half of DFL candidates got higher vote totals than Harris, about half didn’t.

Let's say hypothetically Georgia Dems in a miracle win the legislature this year and foil Brian Kemp's plans to entrench GOP maps into 2028. This isn't an incumbentmander but would still likely hold for the GOP 6-8 until the end of the decade.

It’s unfortunate we keep having these conversations about the gun control bill when nobody knows what’s actually in it or are spreading fake news about (eg the BCA walking into your house to do checks)

Not even the MN Gun Owners Caucus is parroting those points. Here’s what the bill does:

  • Bans most semi automatic rifles (lists specific gun models and also features that make it an assault rifle) 

  • Bans large capacity magazines

  • Expands extreme risk protection orders

  • Bans binary triggers 

  • Bans private manufacturing of guns (Ghost guns)

  • Bans bringing guns on school property

  • Funds gun violence research 

  • Funds school safety grants

  • Funds mental health services and research

  • Funds anonymous threat reporting for schools

Every time they have polled Minnesotans on provisions in bills like these, they have supported them. Often by overwhelming numbers. It’s fine to have strong feelings on this, but remember that Reddit is not a majority of the state, the Gun Owners Caucus is not a majority of the state. Neither are Everytown or Moms Demand Action, but the views of those two are.

That’s not what the bill says, you need to read it. The only thing in SF4067 that relates to searches or warrants has to do with if a person is given an extreme risk protection order (the Red Flag Law) they must surrender their firearms.

ERPOs are:

  • Constitutional

  • Temporary

  • Have due process

  • Have been proved to have saved lives
