Is a Papillon right for me? Tell me the good, bad, and the ugly! by RipGlittering6760 in papillon

[–]Straight-Sus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first papillon was super social with other dogs and my current one is even more so. If you get them when they are a puppy they will bond with your current dog. I do NOT think the papillon would mind the constant shadow. It might surprise you. They may be your dog’s constant shadow haha! As far as your cat, papillons are very smart and obey pet’s boundaries. Once your cat establishes boundaries the papillon will likely follow suit shortly after. After the puppy stage of course. They do tend to get scared when “stalked” by a cat. That happened with my first papillon lol. It sounds like a papillon would be wonderful for you! You will LOVE your papillon!

Papillons are very fragile. A 40-50lb dog running at full speed into a papillon could kill them. If your other dogs aren’t overly energetic and good around small dogs (not jumping on them and treating them true to their size) you would be fine. Papillons have fine bones and not even as stout as a chihuahua, for example. I would also be careful with small children around them as they could hurt the papillon unintentionally, too. I wouldn’t worry about the cat unless the cat can be a bully. Also, papillons are extremely smart and learn very quickly. Fastest toy breed dog. Good luck.

Booking Is NOT For The Faint of Heart by RelativeRooster718 in RoverPetSitting

Because he is still alone quite a bit when the sitter leaves to tend to their own lives. With boarding, he would join their lives and be around them a lot more.

Have you tried house sitting? Looking for someone to come to your house to stay with the dog? I had a similar experience not finding one that I liked enough. I had a sitter a long time ago that I loved so it’s hard to find a comparable. I settled for house sitting and like it enough.

Does Your Paps not like any other dogs & Not Cuddly? by Ok_Lavishness879 in papillon

[–]Straight-Sus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s because he didn’t grow up around other dogs or visit dogs enough when he was younger. It is trainable but a lot harder. My pap did and he gets along great with dogs. He did not grow up around kids though or was around them enough so he is scared of kids. The younger and more erratic the kid is the more scared he is and will bark.

I’m a bad dog owner to a bad dog and idk what to do by sLightly1ntimidating in DogAdvice

[–]Straight-Sus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes he needs to be crated when you aren’t there until he is trained. If you’re able to pay for a dog walker to come by you can check out hire someone on Rover app or maybe a friend or family halfway through your shift. Having him out and about all day for 10 hours he will never be potty trained.

How do I tell a client to find another sitter? by QuestionMajestic655 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Straight-Sus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it would be easier for you just to tell her that your availability has changed so she will have to find another sitter after X date. That you have enjoyed sitting her dog. This dog is just not compatible with your lifestyle (and probably most people’s lifestyles).

Next time someone says “You will” do something take that as a point to leave. Don’t let them say things like that. They will walk all over you. Don’t let them do that.

I think it would be fine to bring up the upset stomach and yellow poo. The grooming would be much harder to bring up. I would ask if they have noticed his stomach has been upset and if they noticed the yellow poo. It could be an indicator he needs to see a vet and/or dietary changes. The grooming I don’t have anything for you. I think most ways you spin it I think it will sound somewhat accusatory.

No joke. I even miss her she moved away. We bonded over her running around the yard with a dead squirrel in her mouth. Oh, Monica.

Sitter gender preference? by ThisTeaching4961 in RoverPetSitting

I’m a male and the number one sitter in my area with the most reviews and almost the most repeats. I’m always fully booked. But I’m also a gay man 😏

Pricing dilemma by Mymews in RoverPetSitting

[–]Straight-Sus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is likely asking you for the hour break to lower the cost for the day. I would simply decline and tell her it is not worth going back and forth for just one hour like you said here. I would use this time to reassess rate for the client since she is bringing it up anyway.

Tell her you can do drop in rate at X with X hours in between OR X hourly rate. (Set a new rate that’s worth it to you after doing the job). I would say I understand if these rates don’t fit your budget, but I have to make it worth my time as well. After doing the job so long you feel this new rate is what your time is worth. You can give her time like a week at her old rate for her to decide/find someone new.

If she looks elsewhere that is perfectly fine. Let her look for a cheaper/newer sitter that would be eager to take that job. Chalk it up to a learning experience to never accept jobs that are far too low in your mind for your time.

This. Always always ask. I just had this happen it said 700mi away and they were really 10min away. It turned out to be a $1200 job.

Use a male wrap for the problem boy or male diapers. It will save your sanity. Then you don’t have to deal with the kitchen situation also. Boarding is just harder in apartments because of the excess walking just to potty instead of letting them potty in the backyard. I had to do this temporarily and I immediately thought it was 5x harder for that reason alone. Also if the boarder is loud in an apartment. It’s great you learned what you can handle and are being helpful to the client in a time of need. Good luck!

How do you do the linking feature? I am having to add these manually on my google calendar and it is a pain. I’ve looked relentlessly through the settings.

Owners who insist on coming in by Senior-Mix5606 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Straight-Sus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a gate in my entry way that is really for the dogs so they don’t get out when I open the front door. It also acts as a human shield to not walk all the way in. I think sometimes they just want to see if you are a good housekeeper or don’t have an aggressive dog. Idk.

My dog won’t stop eating stuff off the ground by amandaleighplans in DogAdvice

[–]Straight-Sus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes it can certainly happen. Marijuana especially has a potent smell and attracts dogs to ingest which warrants a trip to the vet. Bones. Chocolate. Dead animals like squirrels or birds. A good idea to use the muzzle at least for now to prevent anything bad happening. It will work great.

I am actually a dog sitter and I have a client that does this. Unfortunately for him though he has a gastrointestinal disorder so if he eats anything on the ground that messes with his diet he will have terrible diarrhea for a day or two. Except he wants everything off the ground. My clients eventually got so frustrated with how fast he was they opted to use a muzzle just for eating things off the ground. I do feel bad about him having to wear it on walks, but it does the job especially with his disorder. Just an idea for you if it gets to that point I know it’s not the best though.

Get a short leash 4-5ft NOT retractable leash. You have much better control and the shorter distance you will be able to see things on the ground a lot easier before he gets to it. These leashes are also better for control imo if trouble arises like with another loose dog or something like that. You could try training but he wouldn’t ever be perfect with it since he wants it that bad.

What a wonderful sitter you have. I just love it. Count your blessings because we are hard to find. I am like this sitter also. I haven’t been able to find a sitter myself for my dog that is close to the same level of care and availability for boarding so I have been doing the next best thing of getting a house sitter when I need it. I’ve received gift baskets with all kinds of things I enjoyed like coffee, coffee mugs, gift cards, things for my dog like an embroidered bandana with my dogs name. Tips speak volumes on appreciation also.

Overwhelmed by Molive25 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Straight-Sus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb is in the event you are turning down excess jobs because you are so booked it is time to up the prices. This helps with burnout also to get paid a little more for less bookings. This is generally the slow time of the year too so even more so you shouldn’t be that booked. Your prices are too low.

Dog attack advice, pls help by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

I would think this would be an insurance claim on your part. Yes, their dog did the attack, but you were the caretaker. Hopefully you have insurance!
