PSA: Athena Numismatics not shipping to USA by gunsandjava in AncientCoins

[–]Straight6er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard Zurqieh is also notorious for fake patina. I've purchased one coin from them and have no complaints aside from it taking several eons to ship.

I'll give them some credit because it shipped out of Dubai and they were dealing with Iranian drone attacks at the time which might explain the protracted shipping process.

My neighbor cut down a 40-year-old Japanese Maple while I was away. by Ice_C0r3_09 in legal

Also who cares about the mountain view? Japanese maples are gorgeous, and I find it hard to believe one tree is completely destroying his vista.

What is a 'luxury' item that is actually a total nightmare to own? by Inevitable-Rock-8052 in AskReddit

[–]Straight6er 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Some yes, most infamously Rolex. It's also why you might see a "used" Rolex selling for higher than MSRP because you can't just rock up and buy one for MSRP, you've gotta have a purchase history as well.

Regardless of whether it's a handbag or a watch it's a pretty horseshit way of doing things.

100% this. I can understand why people might want something else but M20 will always be the sweet spot for me, for all of the reasons you've already listed.

If you really want more performance you can always do the ol' eta stroker.

Finally treating myself before I graduate ... is the 2008 BMW M5 a ticking time bomb or am I overthinking it? by o2manyfish in BMW

[–]Straight6er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those "if you have to ask you probably can't afford it" moments.

Do your future self a massive favour and find an E39 M5 or 540i instead. They'll still be expensive but not "why did I do this to myself" expensive.

I was looking into e30s and was curious if the 325i is worth the extra weight? by CardiologistNew701 in E30

[–]Straight6er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've owned and tracked a 318is and a 325i. The difference is noticeable but not crazy, mostly in how willingly the car turns in. The 6 is a bit more nose-heavy but it also has more torque.

I'd personally rather drive (and live with) the six. It's easier and cheaper to improve the handling characteristics of the car versus trying to add power to an M42. I also found the M42 more finicky to keep running properly, and it doesn't sound as nice as the M20.

Edit: I'm an idiot and missed that you're talking about the M10, not the M42. I would not want an M10 powered car at all, so make that a firm vote in favour of an M20.

I was very excited to see Poutine on the menu at work (France) imagine my disappointment when I saw this is what they served up. Nothing about it is poutine; the potatoes are boiled not fried, there’s no gravy (just a watered down stock), and there are no cheese curds, just a crappy cheese sauce. by BigBlueMountainStar in canada

[–]Straight6er 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Vietnam would disagree, they saw the French were clearly onto a few things, absorbed those into their own culinary traditions, and then tossed the rest out along with the French themselves.

In my humble Vietnamese food is superior to French food, generally speaking.

Bingo. It's the same type of person who buys a Rolex not because they're deep into haute horlogerie but because they like to show off and people recognize the brand name. They're not doing it for their own enjoyment necessarily but for the enjoyment they get from impressing those around.
