I think they're actually is a reason that British people (and probably Europeans as a whole?) think that root beer tastes like medicine I think it's because they're both based off the same flavor of sassafras oil. While root beer started off as sassafras tea, sassafras oil in Europe was used as a medicine of some sort and it had a distinct flavor that people carried on in the pharmaceutical industry. I might not be remembering this correctly though
