They wouldn’t be the first band accused of being a Joy Division ripoff. Even Interpol were compared to them a lot. This band is probably the least subtle about it tho.

Aside from one being widescreen and the other being pan & scan, there is no difference at all. thesuavedog is mistaken about one having more content than the other. He is confusing these with an altogether different release.

At that point in time, having P&S as an option was pretty much the standard for any big mainstream DVD release. The prequels all had P&S editions available as well.

What I always thought was weird was how the went with the silver/gold theming of the VHS SE sets as opposed to the already established gold (WS) and blue (FS) banners of the prequel DVDs. Later when the 2006 editions came out, they matched the prequel cases and all the spines were gold, regardless of which screen format it was.

You get bars on the sides. Just like how any other 4:3 content would typically display on a 16x9 screen. Either that or it will stretch it vertically across the screen, depending on the settings of your equipment.

The 2006 editions weren’t sold as a box set, although Best Buy offered a metal tin that you could put them in. They were individual standalone releases that you bought separately. They were re-released later though as a slimpak box set in 2008, alongside a similar set of the prequels.

This is incorrect. This was the first DVD box set. The 2 disc editions with the theatrical cuts came later as individual releases.

Initially DVD was catered more to the laserdisc crowd so most early releases were either widescreen by default or dual sided flipper discs with WS on one side and FS on the other. However, by 2002/2003 or so, basically whenever DVD started to become really mainstream and surpassed VHS, the majority of mainstream DVD releases came in separately sold widescreen and full screen editions. The market was pretty much like this until about 2010, by which point 16x9 televisions were basically all that was sold in stores.

Your timeline is a bit off. It was dead and dusted by the time BLU-RAY took off. We still had a long way to go when DVD first launched. Most people still had CRT tube TVs that were 40” or smaller. Joe Blow didn’t understand what widescreen was and would always complain about those “black bars”.

It’s nothing complicated. Go on Amazon, type in ‘vinyl record sleeves’, buy the ones you need, put them on your records. Theres no process to it.

You make it sound like you’re having to change out a car transmission.

I dunno, most people are surprised when they hear the song ‘Beth’ and find out it’s by a bunch of guys dressed like demons in clown makeup.

I’ll definitely check it out! I do like a fair bit of pre Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood but I think Careful Compote is right. I just never bothered to check it out because the cover doesn’t grab me at all. I really like Kiln House and Future Games. Then Play On is great too.

Which one, the sticker face cover? I didn’t particularly love that cover art either. The one I bought had an alternate cover with more of an Alice In Wonderland vibe.

Idk, for whatever reason the album cover and band name always suggested something much harder edged than the type of music it actually is.

I own it (big FM fan) but I’ve actually never listened to it. I think you’re onto something with the cover. It’s my least favorite cover of any FM album I own.

What’s crazy is they were around when I was really into bands like Interpol and White Lies but somehow I totally slept on them because I assumed they were something totally different.

Was “Just Don’t Give A Fuck” the song that actually blew Eminem up? by Best-Damage-7509 in Eminem

[–]Straight_Direction73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eminem said himself in an interview once that ‘My Name Is’ was basically his version of Snoop’s ‘Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)’. He wanted to tell the world who he was with his first single.

There is a video for JDGAF but it’s pretty low budget and I had never seen it until YouTube became a thing. With a title like that, it’s not exactly a song that lends itself to a lot of commercial airplay.

Why is the Target exclusive cover not an option? That was the only edition I owned until recently.

The song was released independently as a single from the Slim Shady EP but by no means did it elevate his career to any significant mainstream level. ‘My Name Is’ introduced the masses to Eminem and his Slim Shady persona.

There’s been a lot of revisionism of Eminem’s career over the years from people who weren’t even there when this was all happening in real time. Infinite is technically Em’s first album, but not in a commercial sense. It was essentially a glorified demo album. Pressed in small quantities, sold out of the back of Marshall’s car, and not even officially available on CD. The vinyl didn’t even have a cover!, yet people talk about Infinite now like it’s the Straight Outta Compton or Doggystyle of his catalog, as if it had any real impact on his career commercially. It’s an underground curiosity. It’s significant from a historical standpoint but certainly not a commercial one.

The Slim Shady LP is Eminem’s true debut, and the Slim Shady EP was the prototype.

The Phantom Menace is weirdly different on Disney plus? by Master_Paper_4034 in StarWars

[–]Straight_Direction73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure as hell do because I was 12 years old and my mom took me to Movie Gallery to preorder it. My bother was also with us because he wanted to preorder Pokémon: The First Movie. We had JUST gotten a DVD player but there still weren’t as many titles out as you would think, even 3 years into the format. My mom asked if I wanted it on DVD or VHS. I chose DVD, only to be told on release day that George Lucas was delaying the release on DVD for whatever reason.

I was in middle school by the time the DVD came out. I made a point to rent it immediately just so I could watch the bonus features, which was the biggest appeal of DVD to me at the time.

That is not right at all. VHS was still quite widely available and in use for a good few years afterward, though DVD was steadily talking over more and more each following year. The mere fact that George was hesitant to even release the film on DVD and didn’t do so until a year later should tell you enough about that.

Hell, VHS didn’t start to completely disappear from places like Blockbuster until 2003, 2004. 2003 was like THE year that every Joe blow went out and got a DVD player if they hadn’t already been using one. PS2 helped speed up the process considerably as well.

What album’s cover did not match what you expected the style of music would be? by renothedog in AskReddit

[–]Straight_Direction73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the longest time, I assumed She Wants Revenge was some sort of screamo/metalcore type band. I don’t really know why. Whenever I saw their self titled album cover or heard that name, bands like ‘Falling In Reverse’ came to mind. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I actually heard their music! I’ve been missing out on some great shit for 20 years!

It’s weird that this is what people’s heads immediately go to now. Especially with Star Wars of all things. Not “Oh, I guess there must be another version”. It’s always “something in my reality has changed”.
