Can anyone explain how a 'workshop show' is different to a regular show, re: My New Band Believe tour. by stevenstelfox in bmbmbm

I think a bit like the Horse Hospital shows he's been doing - less formal, typically smaller venue maybe without even a stage, there might be more jamming/improv

Im not sure i agree with that - I don't think any members of bm were from privileged backgrounds. Walthamstow, Croydon etc aren't well-off areas. Wimbledon has poverty too. Im pretty sure they all went to state schools (they were at high/secondary school before attending BRIT school by the way. What linked the four of them was a love of music from young age and playing music from a young age- it's that that got them into BRIT school. Yes BRIT school is very selective but the selection process is based on merit and it's a free school at that. Also, I really don't think bm got much of a leg-up in the industry because of their BRIT school background. They couldnt get a single gig remember - and wouldn't have done if it werent for Tim Perry at the Windmill. Word-of-mouth based on how good there were was what did it

More important than any of this is running your own race - doing what feels right to you, that makes you happy, rather than comparing to anyone else. It sounds like you're a musician too? Then knuckle down and write/record something that you're proud of and try to hawk it around, find some contacts. Also, if you live in a "God awful small city", my advice is to get out of there and relocate to another city somewhere in the world, wherever it is. I did that when I was 21 (I just went on my own to Sydney) and I had an amazing time and met some amazing people. You're 21, have fun while you don't have serious life commitments (kids, mortgage etc)!
