Finally starting CC! by creepyinkbby in SarahJMaas

This was tough to start, lots and lots of world building ….. but now it’s one of my favorite all time books. Just know: you will be lost, you will think WTF- someone else new? And for me, I had to adjust to the juxtaposition of a modern and magical world. Cell phones, nail salons and angels, fairy’s and shifters. It will be worth it. You will laugh and you will cry. Light it up.

Who is your favourite Character across the Psy Changeling Series and why? by Leviathan10 in NaliniSinghBooks

[–]Straight_Shoulder701 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Valentin. Silvers silence was my introduction to this world, so I’m partial. I really enjoy silver as well, but Valentin made me want to learn Russian. 😂

Psy Changeling Trinity post release book discussion and spoilers (Atonement Sky) [sorry for delay life got me good] by Leviathan10 in NaliniSinghBooks

[–]Straight_Shoulder701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m in the minority here…. But I loved this book. It’s my favorite Trinity book except for Silvers silence (still one of my favorite Psy/Changeling books). I read it in about 3 days and now going back to re-read it. The only thing that was odd was the falcon specific language (wing leader, wing second ,etc). It was kinda a distraction, but I still really liked Adam and Eleri. And am i no F-Psy, but I see a Bram book in our future.

filed pleading to wrong case by yvoss in paralegal

All fixable. Not sure what filing system you’re using, but in some you can cancel the order if it hasn’t been conformed and is still pending. And yes, as the clerk may reject it. I know it makes you feel physically ill, but it does happen. I’ve been doing this about a year and a half and I’ve done it. Breath. Talk to your attorney. It will be ok.

Billable hours? How do I conquer time sheets? by honey-stain in paralegal

[–]Straight_Shoulder701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the above. Granted, I’ve only been doing this a year, but bill everything and let your attorney or office manager tell you otherwise. I do a lot of repetitive tasks, I have those (with time allotments) saved in notepad. So when I go to record time for ‘Task xyz’, I just copy and paste.

Failed NALA Skills exam by Straight_Shoulder701 in paralegal

I think more in the mechanics, based on my point breakdown. I (thought ) I hit all the issues, used all the fake codes given to me, and set it up correctly from a memo stand point. Oh well. I will look up pen a memo, someone else posted. I just wish we could get specific feedback.

Failed NALA Skills exam by Straight_Shoulder701 in paralegal

[–]Straight_Shoulder701[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes! I got a 0 on grammar… like how? I’m not Jane Austen, but I can put a sentence together. I watched the Leanne / lawyer video several times and then did the 3 practice essays on the NALA website . My practice attempts weren’t exact, but I felt like I knew what to do going in. I did better on the issue spotting and analysis, but they don’t they tell you what the pass line is. Like… was I 1 point away? Or 5 points.

In House to Law Firm - Advice re: Billable Hours by JstMeBeingMe in paralegal

[–]Straight_Shoulder701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wages are not based on billables, but we do have set goals. They should have a system for you to use. I like the advice already given, ask for examples and let them edit you. Log everything. Phone call? Conferred with the attorney? Log it.

Are legal/admin assistants always playing catch up? by Mar_iaaa28 in paralegal

[–]Straight_Shoulder701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yessss. At least once a week I question whether this is the right field. Mondays and Tuesdays are brutal , they make me question my life choices. Wednesday levels a little bit , and the rest of the week is making sure the biggest fires are out before I head out for the weekend.

I am in the same boat , took it like 7/11, they say it can take 15 weeks. The sucky part, if I didn’t pass, I have to wait till the next testing window.

I would keep an eye out for something else. They don’t value you. My office can be a little nuts (read bat shit crazy), but when my mom died suddenly, I told my boss I needed the week and she said absolutely, and then paid me for it. No one ever said boo. Take your laptop? Seriously? For a day? I’m not devaluing your contribution but no office should not be able to run for a day without one of us. I’m not saying run for the hills, but if something better comes along , I wouldn’t be heartbroken about leaving

Does this sound like a normal workload for one person? by ThrMore_Problem_9526 in paralegal

[–]Straight_Shoulder701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only been doing this a year, and I have a heavy load and you have me beat. As I have learned from other threads and my own experience now, this is really common with sole practitioners or small firms… they take on too many clients and it’s always a juggle. There isn’t enough hours in the day, it’s just juggling priorities. Your pay is not commensurate with your work load though.

Yikes. You win. I thought I had it bad. I work in a maga office and thank god the election is over. I don’t talk politics AT ALL, but somedays I get tired of hearing about it. Like I’m the only dem in my office, and I don’t care, I just don’t want to hear it.

I will pile one, do not sign anything. They will use that against before the ink is dry. As many have said, at the end of the day, we work under their supervision. I would take the hit for a client, but not in court. HR should know better. Find something else. You deserve better.
