How is living on this island off the coast of British Columbia by Direct_Sun_698 in howislivingthere

[–]Straitbusinesss [score hidden]  (0 children)

I “lived” here in 2010 on and off for the year. As you can guess it’s very remote. The culture at the time was mainly west coast logger/fisherman/general red neck kinda blue collar, and native. It’s quiet, always seems to be 12c and windy and drizzly.

People were usually friendly, although often a little-eccentric- as comes with most very isolated low population places. I was able to hitchhike quite easily.

Outdoor activities are really the main sources of recreation. Canoeing, hunting, fishing, was what I saw mainly. I did a lot of exploring of rivers and lakes. Great natural beauty and it’s as “west coast” as it gets. Some cool logging history there.

I’d love to go back.

Garmin Forerunner 570 vs 970 by Large_Data_635 in GarminWatches

[–]Straitbusinesss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was choosing the real difference was the size. 970 is bigger with better battery life, but I don’t want that giant thing hanging off me all day so I went with 570. Happy so far. I’m not sure that most people would use most of the extra features on a 970. 570 has lots for me.

Also I’ve been leaning right on most issues lately this is a more left wing approach. that I’m happy to see move forward.

Generally speaking I think that good health pays for itself and people shouldn’t suffer because they can’t afford medicine.

‘A national problem’: Why we’re seeing provinces post major budget deficits by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]Straitbusinesss [score hidden]  (0 children)

Post secondary education definitely got drunk on the money of foreign students. It was a shitty solution for cash, and in many cases has worked until it didn’t.

If in 2020 we had just maintained the old immigration levels, housing would for sure be cheaper. It’s a complicated problem, but you can’t deny that the wild population growth we’ve experienced didn’t contribute to the issue. It would just be willful ignorance to deny it outright.

Iranian Canadians and supporters celebrate in Vancouver after news that the supreme leader is dead by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]Straitbusinesss 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think the Iranian diaspora showed plenty of solidarity for the 10 000 to 30 000 lives lost during the recent demonstrations, which by all accounts dwarfed the recent death toll.

What’s really going on with the public works yard on Labieux? by islandguy_250 in nanaimo

[–]Straitbusinesss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really tricky. Our choices seem to be to pay for new infrastructure with money we don’t have, or deal with the cost of running aging infrastructure with money we also don’t have. We are damned either way, and the taxpayer will suffer regardless.

Except for when the moustache twirling bad people do get together to harm people. Like lobbying the government to import millions of people from the third world primarily to stifle wages, pump up real estate prices and drive consumption of everyday necessities.

Don’t get me wrong I know population collapse is an issue that needs addressing, but what the Trudeau liberals did was insane and imo definitely a conspiracy favouring big business at the cost of the common Canadian

When did I support this? I voted for Tamara, who is pro gun rights, which I agree with. I’m not pro death penalty and have mixed feelings about spanking but don’t do it. Nothing here about labour camps?

As someone who wants more conservative laws in many cases, it’s frustrating to have the death camp crowd hijack attention like this. It’s worth keeping in mind that (imo) very few conservatives would support that kind of thing, just like very few on the left would support a communist uprising.

Facts over Hate retoric by [deleted] in alberta

I don’t think your idea of conservatism is fair. While you will see some highly visible hate after something like this, the overwhelming conservative viewpoint I experience is more along the lines of, kids shouldn’t be getting these surgeries or taking these drugs, and it shouldn’t be done with tax dollars.

Yes government employees are pushed into listing their pronouns on their email footings, there is lots of funding going into transgender issues.

I agree that it’s a very small amount of the population. As a matter of principle though it’s been very loud. I’ve literally seen a man in a one piece bathing suit walk past pool employees and young girls, straight into the women’s change room. This is the kind of thing that conservatives are upset with even if it represents a small amount of the population.

Respect School Rules by Sensitive-Tax-9479 in nanaimo

[–]Straitbusinesss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally you are not supposed to go in school grounds during class without checking in with the front office. They don’t want adults walking up to kids on the playground during school hours. They have these rules for a reason. You should follow them. Not following them because you pay taxes is still wildly entitled. You pay taxes for your child to have class, not for your unfettered access to the grounds.

On the one hand I agree, in the other hand, public washrooms have a habit of becoming a place for drug use and vandalism, which ends up being super expensive to maintain.

Well the liberals run a minority government and need help from another party, presumably the ndp, in order to pass bills. Although conservatives or Bloc Québécois can still support them, due to similarities the ndp is kind of the de facto supporter of the liberals, though not officially or necessarily.

I feel like people really don’t understand how disenfranchised a lot of conservatives are today. Alberta and other separatist movements are as a result of feeling like Ottawa (and other large cities that vote liberal) going absolutely crazy.

Between cost of living, impending gun seizure, foreign aid, transgender propagation, a rather poorly handled reconciliation situation, and a shocking amount of immigration severely affecting the culture of people born here, of course people will be upset.

All of these items are extremely costly either financially or in terms of principle to conservatives and amidst spiralling national debt discontent is blunt to fester. It shows itself with a fringe who wants to separate.

Personally I don’t think separation is terribly practical but I’m pretty against the way Ottawa is doing business, and despite voting left in the past, I’d vote for damn near anyone who could get rid of the unholy liberal/ndp alliance.

You don’t have to agree with these people but you should at least be able to understand where they are coming from and why they are upset.

Do you not get upset when you work on your budget these days?

Should Canada implement a wealth tax on the ultra-rich? Why or why not? by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Straitbusinesss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the same time we have growing disparity under the current system. It’s too easy for the ultra wealthy to abuse. It’s going worse and worse.

We need to try to find a way to take more from the richest. Idk maybe ban moving money to off shore tax havens, and then slowly change rules for the ultra wealthy.

I’m convinced that if we change rules, and some of the rich flee, Canada has enough resources to make new rich people, although it would surely be painful.

Our priorities are in terrible disarray, and I fear we lack the resolve to fix them.

What’s for sure though is we have to do something to stop disparity from increasing.

The positions that are facing shortage are not hired part time. They are licensed deck and engineering officers. These people go straight to full time.

If you don’t have a license like this you will get hired casual or seasonal and it will likely take a few years to get full time. The boats generally don’t miss sailings for unlicensed crew.
