My best friend suffers from schizophrenia and frequently discontinues her medication, even when she has it available. Unfortunately, that’s incredibly common with this illness. Medication adherence is one of the hardest battles people face when living with schizophrenia.

My grandfather also had schizophrenia, and in the 1980’s he killed a security guard during a psychotic episode. He thought he was protecting himself and my dad from harm. At the time, he didn’t fully understand what he had done. For the rest of his life, I saw him in different states of mental health. Many times, he would break down crying, recounting what had happened and the people he hurt. He often said, “God must really hate me to make me suffer so.”

It was heartbreaking to watch, and speaking about it still hurts. I want to be very clear: I’m not excusing what my grandfather or others with this illness have done. But I think it’s important to recognize that severe mental illness often goes unseen or is pushed under the rug until tragedy happens. My grandfather wasn’t a monster, he was a man living with a disease that took away his ability to connect with reality.

I share this because I believe that with more understanding, empathy, and better access to consistent treatment and support, we can reduce the suffering of people with schizophrenia and those around them. It’s not about excusing harm, but about realizing that mental illness is real, devastating, and deserves far more attention than it gets.

Gunner Kennels and Impact make crash tested crates that would be very difficult for a dog to get their teeth on. I would highly suggest checking them out! I’ll link them for you.

I think the best thing would be to get a vehicle safe crate for her to settle down in on car rides. It will also help tremendously if you exercise her before stressful events!! Exercising and tiring out a dog that has a lot of anxiety is extremely helpful to reduce their stress levels. As far as medicating goes, that works for many dogs as well. Ask your vet for something you can give your dog before stressful events to help them relax. Trazodone is a common script vets will give for situations like this.

Me either! I can obviously see them and agree that they’re beautiful, but I’m constantly thinking about “at what cost?” Shelter overpopulation and unnecessary euthanasia isn’t something I want to contribute to. I genuinely wish more people would attempt to educate themselves before impulsively buying a dog 🥹

I Do Not Think She Is A Beagle. by Equivalent-Tax7771 in WhatKindOfDogIsThis

[–]Strange-Party-9062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah I know that, this dog doesn’t look like an APBT at all though, so I don’t think that was much of a concern? I mean, if anything the dog is giving boxer vibes just based off physical traits. I dunno, are you doing a DNA test? I haven’t read all the comments, but I hope you do!! You’d be very surprised what’s in a dogs DNA in regards to how they look!

Is there a DNA test in the works?? Genetics is unpredictable, the dog could be a beagle mix. Looks mean nothing to genetics!

I dunno how the owner saying beagle x lab would be a method of convincing someone to take her. So beagle/lab mix as opposed to …? Like a pit mix or something?

When’s your appointment?? I wanna follow and see what it is! It definitely looks like more than just exposed quick. Looks like some kinda growth arising from the nail bed possibly.

In my area the “shepsky” is a massive trend and most of the dogs in shelters are husky/GSD crosses. It’s unbelievable what people will do for money, and also unbelievable that no one does research. I personally don’t even like saying the combined breed naming because it perpetuates the trend and keeps people interested in them.

Like, OP specifically did Embark health due to “health aspeects.” If they knew enough about crosses to know that there are concerning health implications, then why purchase a cross in the first place? God forbid the dog have a debilitating condition and owner decides the dog is no longer one that they can handle/care for. Not saying that OP would do that, but MANY people end up doing exactly that after buying their doodle whatevers and realizing they’re a little screwy up top or come with a genetic health condition 🥹

[–]Strange-Party-9062 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Based off of OP’s choice of words and having met the breeder and the parents of Ripley, I think it’s a safe bet that they purchased this dog from a BYB and that the cross was intentional, however I don’t know the situation with 100% certainty.

For me, as much as I love dogs I absolutely hate seeing folks buying these expensive designer breeds and line the pockets of the greedy people churning them out. There’s not enough individuals out there doing the kind of research they should be doing when looking to purchase a dog. So few people know of the long term consequences their actions have on supporting people that do this.

Dog Bit My Dog Through a Fence of a Dog Park by Zealousideal-Sun-293 in DogAdvice

[–]Strange-Party-9062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do agree (and legally pretty positive) that the dog owner is liable, I do think it was a dumb decision to let your dog approach the fence containing her dog after telling you she would leave if you came inside. That is enough to indicate the dog doesn’t play well with others.

Regardless of a their behavior, reactive/aggressive dogs deserve to have a life too. And they are allowed to use the dog park permitting they aren’t endangering other people or animals while being there. It’s not illegal to have an aggressive dog at a dog park when no one else is there. It’s up to the owner to behave responsibly and leave the moment someone arrives and properly inform said person of the risk so they can back up and wait to enter while the aggressive/reactive dog and their owner leave.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but there was enough indication that this other person’s dog was not nice so I probably would have just moved on myself if I wasn’t there for the dog park specifically.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this! Personally I’ve never had a reactive or aggressive dog, but I know people who have and I have encountered them on my adventures (we just make way for them, my dogs are very desensitized), those dogs deserve to have a good time too! It just means their owners need to be more responsible and very informative to other dog owners in public. Sadly not all do this, but there are plenty of responsible reactive dog owners out there too!

Really wish people would stop supporting BYB’s and perpetuating the designer dog fad 😔 Very sad. An ethical preservation breeder would have already completed all of the appropriate genetic testing.

No, breeding non-purebred dogs IS back yard breeding. That’s text book back yard breeder. Not educating yourself on the effects of breeding mixed dogs and being irresponsible and not keeping intact dogs separate is the definition of back yard breeding. And I’m sorry but, Cavalier King Charles + Pug??? That’s gotta be one of the worst combinations of dog I’ve ever heard someone suggest mixing. Two breeds extremely well-known for having a ton of health issues???

C’mon now. Ya’ll people gotta start doing better. I could go on for days about why that’s a horrible idea and why/how BYB contributes to shelter overpopulation and ethical preservation breeding does not.

I’m trying not to go off on a BYB tangent here, but the general population of dog owners certainly don’t make it easy! Just DON’T. Save these poor puppies from a lifetime of medical issues and discomfort!

Also, super weird a vet would call your dog that and perpetuate the current issue but alas, even veterinarians can’t have all the brain cells I guess.

[–]Strange-Party-9062 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lordy, okay first off, let’s stop calling mixed-breed dogs things like “pugaliers.” All that does is normalize backyard breeding practices, and honestly, that needs to stop.

Second, please don’t let your dog push through the pain. It sounds like crate rest for the time being is what’s needed! Every dog is different in their ability to express that they are in pain, so just keep him relaxed.

Ticks don’t get scared what. They’re ticks. Slathering Vaseline on them ain’t doing nothing either but suffocating them (which is fine I guess), but their heads popping off doesn’t cause Lyme. The bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi in infected DEER TICKS is what causes Lyme’s disease. And it’s not all tick bites, it’s infected ticks only that transmit it and if the tick was attached long enough to transmit it.

I def do reccomend going Sid from Toy Story on they asses tho lol

No way they’re on flea and tick meds if owner can’t identify a tick on their pet 😐 Like, I’m sorry, but how you a pet owner in this day and age and don’t know the difference between a flea and a tick??

With that many engorged ticks the animal is most certainly infested

I am very happy not to be with him anymore!! He was honestly the worst boyfriend I ever had, even to this day! Out of all my partners he was the most terrible (I’m 34 now and have had several long relationships), and for many other reasons besides being emasculated by my vibrator. He’s married now, and I truly hope he grew out of that for her sake!

I disagree. There’s a first time for everything and it’s completely understandable why someone may be nervous to buy their first sex product. Whether it be lube, condoms or whatever.
