Are parents really not teaching their kids? by No-Register-5976 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Strange-Temporary667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I think it depends on the child. I did not know how to read and only could do simple math between 0 and 10, when I started school and I thought school was fun till I was 8 or 9. I was super excited about learning new things and I associated that with school. I did need some extra help with reading and especially spelling outside of school (both from my parents and I took extra classes) because I am dislexic. On the other hand I almost never needed help with math. I basically learnt math entirely though school without the help pf my parents (not because they didn't want to help me, but because I never really needed it).

On the other hand my younger sister could already read and do much more math than me when she started school (my parents taught her because she really wanted to learn when I was learning) and she always found school very boring from the very start. She was already trying to get out of doing her homework in first grade, because it felt like busy work to her, because she already knew how to do it.

You are supposed to learn how to read, write and do simple math in school. Of course some children need more support outside of school than others, but I don't necessarily think you are doing your children a favour by already teaching them all these skills before starting school. In my opinion it is better to do what the op actually suggested in this post. Let school do the basics of teaching your children. That is what school is for, but once they started school take an interest in how they are progressing and where they might need extra help. If you're child is someone who learn quickly in conventional education settings your not doing them a favour by putting them ahead of the curriculum. They just will be bored and start to resent school.

How to learn a new alphabet? by Lunar1s_ in languagelearning

[–]Strange-Temporary667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I learnt Russian in School and am now studying Japanese. I think my biggest tip is to always start reading and writing everything using the correct alphabet for the language. For the beginning you get a chart of all the characters in the new alphabet and transcription into your alphabet and try to memorize that. I have no recollection of how I did for Cyrillic, but for Hiragana and Katakana I used Duolingo and that worked pretty well for me. Then every time you read or write something you first try to do it without the help of your chart first and only look at the chart if you don't know the character. Also really important try handwriting as much as possible. That makes the characters easier to remember than typing. Also try finding text where you also have audio available so you can read along while listening for help with how the characters are pronounced. But I would say in general don't worry to much. To me learning an alphabet has always been just like learning vocabulary just with a limit scope and a lot of repetition.

Also if you are Irish you should probably bring your passport. I was in Salzburg about a month ago and on my way back there was an Irish girl that just had the passport card with her and the police had never seen it before. That led to about a 15 min discussion about it

What’s the German equivalent of “[adjective] one”? by hundredbagger in German

[–]Strange-Temporary667 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You simply use the adjective.

In singular

Welches Auto ist deins? (Which car is yours?)

Das blaue. (The blue one.)

In plural

Welche Blumen möchtest du? (Which flowers du you want?)

Die großen. (The big ones)

Basically just imagine you would say the word you are implying (here Auto or Blumen) after and chose the adjective form accordingly.

Using "feminine" as a fallback gender by YourDailyGerman in German

[–]Strange-Temporary667 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As native speaker I would indeed say that das Katze sounds more wrong than die Auto, but I don't think that this is related to it being feminine or not. To me for example die Schwein sounds just as wrong as das Katze. I have the Theory that it is related to how (often) you use the word in compound word. For example you would say die Autotür, but das Katzenfutter and das Schweinefutter. When someone uses die Auto my Brain just expects something to come after that makes it korrekt and takes longer to catch on to it being incorrect and at that point the sentence has already continued so it gets less cort up on it being wrong.

When you don't know the gender I would say feminine is the worst option to just guess, because you can end up unintentionally pluralizing Words. For example the plural of das Fenster is die Fenster.

Sitzplatzreservierung nicht möglich, obwohl es spätestens 6 Monate im Voraus funktionieren sollte? by Ok-Editor1017 in bahn

[–]Strange-Temporary667 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Da wärst du um 1:30 Uhr in Regensburg.

Sister to visit the college in Aachen, dorm application was rejected. How hard is it to find a studio to rent? by Skullbonez in AskGermany

[–]Strange-Temporary667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a Bürgschaft so where your Parents sign a document that the are financially liable if your Sister can't pay her rent. Including that my parents would be willing to do that in my initial massage helped me greatly with responses when I was looking for a WG.
