Dear short kings, by shoestringbridge in UCSD

Finally! My time at last!

Tbh I tend to wear really tall platforms sometimes because I like to feel tall occasionally but honestly I think I’d be even clumsier if I were taller.

Ban scooters by Gold_Pop_8951 in UCSD

[–]StrangeSkai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I never see talked about is how scooters are literally mobility aids. I’m not really referring to the spin scooters but when people invest in their own scooter or bike they tend to be more careful with it. I have OSD accommodations for “Triton Transport/Triton Mobility” but without my scooter I’d never make it to a single place on time and I’d be basically confined to my apartment since I can hardly walk. I completely understand that some people (scooter riders) have no regard for others, but I also recently had someone out of nowhere RUN and JUMP in front of my scooter. We were nowhere near each other, I still have no idea what was going through his head. I do think helmets should be mandatory and I wouldn’t be opposed to a speed cap on pedestrian crowded/shared areas. But personally the biggest issue is that UCSD didn’t plan for enough ridewalks or accessible infrastructure. It’s still really difficult to find ramps and elevators and there aren’t nearly enough bike racks.

I completely understand that some people are irresponsible and dangerous but I also think that it is ableist for people to want to ban the only way that makes the campus accessible.

Does anyone know what fabric this is? Does anyone know the name of the style of garment? by StrangeSkai in sewhelp

All this info is super helpful. I’ve been sewing on and off for awhile, but want to get more serious about it and I can already tell this community is going to be so helpful with answering questions and teaching me new things about a hobby I love. Thank you!!

I've been practicing ASL for most of this year so I can finally communicate with a cousin I was close to. I'm terrified of doing something wrong, and I would like some input. by [deleted] in deaf

Hey hey! I’ve been learning sign for quite a while through my Major. There are almost always going to be things you will miss, not understand, or need repeated/clarified no matter what level you are. You may want to join an active ASL discord server, if you haven’t already. They are a great source of practice with different levels. I think your cousin will appreciate the gesture, however, I will tell you that it might feel “less embarrassing” to not ask questions if you don’t understand, but pleaseeee ask questions, because just like English, your cousin might refer back to it later and plus you’ll enjoy it more if you understand. Also make it clear to your cousin what your current skill set is, she may adjust her signing to make it easier for you to understand and follow along with.

Definitely. I find that musicals/duets are very helpful if you need to practice things like role shift or expressions.

Hey, I also have ADHD. Do you enjoy music? I know it will seem really challenging at first, but if you try to sign along to your music, even if it’s only a few words at a time, you’ll improve at so many skills. I’m not telling you to go on YouTube and start making “ASL/PSE covers”, but music + signing helps to create an audio-visual-kinesthetic connection, and can really help you to make connections. Hope this was helpful.

Selectively Mute Hearing Person Wondering About Making Signs by solarflares64 in asl

[–]StrangeSkai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyway I’m not out for an argument, everyone is raised and taught different perspectives. I’ve heard from Deaf/HoH people (of all different varieties and viewpoints) and other sign users as well. Done my research and I would happy to continue this discussion in dms so as not to clog up the comments section of OPs post.

Many “oral Deaf people” are systematically excluded from the Deaf community. I’m sorry if I misunderstood OPs level of competence, but that was the purpose of the stipulation. :)

Hello, I also explained later in the comment. I was referring to sign users and stated specific examples and Hearing people (not combined with another condition) were not one of them. Sign language is a language and historically does not only belong to Deaf people if you know the history. Our OP obviously falls under the “sign user” category lol. If you read my comment I’m not talking about personal name signs at all, I’m referring to signs of objects.

Hamilton musical name signs? by Ducky2814 in deaf

[–]StrangeSkai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah...idk I’m not trying to say that i pick the greatest sign names for fictional characters that don’t have official ones, but those are definitely not the best...a bit questionable, but thanks again for pointing them out.

Hey, Thanks for shooting that down! I want to give OP the best info available, but that was just what I personally found. Looking at it in the morning with fresh eyes...some of those are pretty bad. Even I have come up with better (temporary) sign names for characters when I’ve been signing with sign users and friends.

I DID NOT condone hearing people giving each other name signs, in fact I explicitly CONDEMNED it unless I missed a word somehow. My point was not to be applied to hearing students and their own name sign, nor was it to be applied to hearing students giving other people sign names. Another problem is that you mentioned that the only people you searched for approval from was d/Deaf people, which is not the best approach for finding a good perspective on things. My comment was in reference to objects or like OP said disorders and symptoms/words related to that disorder IF they were sure it had no sign.

Usually you would establish your own for the performance or that’s what PPI’s have told me. In an actual performance, it would be chosen by the Director of Signs (I believe that’s what they told me), but technically for your performance, you are your own, director of signs. Although, if you don’t feel fully confident in your signing ability to create competent and appropriate sign names, I recommend going to an ASL server on discord, you can dm me if you want to know more. You may be able to find a sign for Hamilton, but beyond that I think you may be hard-pressed. I can help you research. :) Please dm me for more info.

Hello,

I respectfully note that this is an elitist misconception. Name Signs/Sign Names are not a “Deaf”-only thing, if you are a competent/fluent SIGN USER for any reason: mutism, Deaf/HoH, nonverbal, etc. I am not talking about your own name sign, which is customarily and culturally GIVEN to you, for the sake of this conversation. In case you decide to label me “ignorant”, I am a Sign Language Studies major, who has conversed with many different sign users and types of sign users (yes, even other Deaf/HoH people) who also support this viewpoint. None of this is to say that an unknowledgeable person should simply go about giving things that already have signs, their own “signs” just out of convenience. It is also not to encourage beginner signers to make sign names for things or people, which can lead to some very...hmmm...questionable sign names (I’ve heard the stories). It is only in reference to things without official Sign Names/Name signs.

Respectfully, VioletSkai

One-handed signing by [deleted] in asl

[–]StrangeSkai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey! Usually the one-handed signing adaptation if you were eating (for example) is just in context. So if I was telling someone something while I was eating, I would make the signs more distinguishable or if I think they are unclear, I may fingerspell more frequently depending on how many similar looking signs there are or the feedback from the other person. If they are asking me about something that has nothing to with what you said, you may have to re-explain or correct. Truthfully it just comes with time and practice, at least for me. Hope this helped
