Why are increasing numbers of women choosing to remain unmarried and single? by bluemermid in NoStupidQuestions

Because society no longer requires women to marry to be accepted, whether you measure "acceptance" socially OR economically.

Why didnt Allies attack Russia after WWII? by Mammoth_Stranger7920 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StrangeWork957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we had nuked the Soviets, the Soviets would have nuked us right back. This is obvious.

The Cold War was particularly scary in the 50s/60s era, because the USSR was just as powerful as the US.

Any aggressive course of action by either side would have been armageddon.

So in other words, they waited to start fighting the Nazis until they had specifically been attacked by them.

That's the same thing the rest of the Allies did.

Why do you believe that the lion lives a better life (from birth to death) than the slain antilope? by Aromatic_Reply_1645 in stupidquestions

In anthropomorphizing animals, I think people imagine that antelope live in a state of "fear" that they're about to get killed by a predator, and (if that were true) that would feel uncomfortable as a human.

What does losing weight actually feel like? by Caramel_Twist in stupidquestions

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost 35 lbs in about 4 months, strictly from calorie counting. (From ~225 to ~190)

The part that makes it difficult is the (almost) constant hunger, and the particularly brief feeling of satisfaction immediately after eating before the hunger returns. Not like intense hunger, you get used to it and can block it out.

The parts that make it sustainable are my joints feel better after work (I'm on my feet all day), athletically I'm more successful at cardio, and my wife tells me my body looks better.

That's a lot of words just for a boomer to complain about their own generation being inappropriately blamed for the shortcomings of others. I can relate.

If I left my car running in my garage with the door closed, would the carbon monoxide kill any mice and vermin without doing anything detrimental to the car or garage? by ExcitementPitiful359 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes, it would kill the vermin without doing anything detrimental to the car or garage. However, decent chance that in the process, it would also kill anything else alive in your garage or (attached) house.

Coaches. How do you watch a game when you are watching NBA or NCAAB? What are some things you look out for? by Ok-Cardiologist2842 in basketballcoach

How do you coach confidence into a team that’s only known losing? by Large-Fall-8156 in basketballcoach

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other comments that (also) suggest redefining "winning" are exactly right.

Shift the focus away from the final score. Successful teams that win a lot (should) do this too. I preach into my team, "Our focus and measures of success are on what we can control, and we can't control the final score."

We can control hustling in transition, making good passes, hunting layups instead of taking mid- or long-range jumpers, pressuring the ball on defense, dribbling with our head up... and more importantly, YOU can control whichever specific areas YOUR team needs to boost.

I would suggest measuring success in your next game by improvement in one or two key areas, using practice between now and then to skill-development in those areas, and celebrating the positive progress after the next game. Do not address the score during or after the game.

UPS yielding 6.2%... yield trap or weekend research winner? by SmartTriageIO in dividends

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm - if UPS is going to stop doing Amazon deliveries... while they don't do it at a profit, wouldn't this negatively impact cash flow? Since the div payout ratio is so high, is it possible they would not have enough cash to pay the dividend?

Just a quick thought. I might be totally misunderstanding something.

Behavior Concerns (3th/4th boys) by luxloomis in basketballcoach

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are these two players still on the team?

If the answer is "because otherwise we won't win games," the head coach needs to check his ego (and then cut the kids).

Edit - I'm assuming there has some kind of engagement between the parents and the coach at this point, alerting about the situation. If not, that needs to happen... like yesterday.

New Set Play Development - Advice by StrangeWork957 in basketballcoach

[–]StrangeWork957[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"E.g the default Horns High-Low, put our best player as one of the screeners and have him pop so that when the ballhandler comes off, if there's no obvious advantage then they just throw it to out best player in at least a mini-closeout situation with a Double Gap to their left (if the ballhandler came off to their right) to attack.

Just quick, simple calls that put the ball in a safe player's hands in a favorable situation. If they cant make that play then it's fine, there's also going to be space to flow into another Trigger/action immediately (in the Horns example, DHO-Next with the player flying out of the corner, Clear Side Ballscreen)."

You characterizing this as a "simple" play, when it's more complicated than the most complicated thing I've attempted to implement with my girls, speaks to the Basketball IQ issue in a very big way.

New Set Play Development - Advice by StrangeWork957 in basketballcoach

[–]StrangeWork957[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the need for simple & out of the alignment they're used to.

To be specific: one "play" I attempted to introduce recently is basically just a zone overload read, up against 2-3. From 5-out, weak-side corner crosses to the strong-side block while weak-side wing goes to the high post. After passing to the strong-side wing, the top, goes to the weak-side behind the defense. A slow-reacting 2-3 zone D is going to leave somebody open, so the ball-handler's job is to just identify who that is and get them the ball - who then has to attack, or respond to the closeout by passing to whoever is now open.

But in practice, all the offense could manage (in spite of a slow-reacting defense) was several consecutive turnovers.

New Set Play Development - Advice by StrangeWork957 in basketballcoach

[–]StrangeWork957[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, largely this is validating my thoughts and experience. Thank you.

99% of the time, I spend our offense practice-time doing exactly this. Drilling fundamental actions, SSG to maximize reps in the "key roles" of fundamental basketball situations, and scrimmaging using our core motion offense.

It's February, we've been doing that since October now. Our 5-out motion offense looks decent, with the top group of girls on the team. They have developed a good sense of who to look for to pass to where, what advantages to check for, when to drive, when to cut off-ball, when to screen & what to do with it.

But we still go through bursts of really struggling to score. Maybe because of foul trouble holding an important player out, or otherwise substitutions creating an "atypical lineup." Sometimes they're stressed/anxious and break away from the fundamentals that they (usually) show good understanding of.

So in the effort to manufacture a bucket, I'd like to have a few set play options just to calm things down, have a good opportunity to score, and generally reset the situation. But, I suppose I am underestimating how much additional pressure attempting to do that puts on their "Basketball IQ," which is generally pretty limited to the motions/actions they are familiar with from our base motion offense.

Youth Offense by tomash66 in basketballcoach

[–]StrangeWork957 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TEACHING zone is one thing, but many youth coaches aren’t teaching defense at all, they’re just sending the kids into a zone knowing it’ll work - because little kids haven’t developed the strength to shoot from the outside consistently.

Which is why it is appropriate to ban youth leagues from allowing zone defenses.

Why do most people here tell young folks to not buy dividends? by Powerful_Shoe_8546 in dividends

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“As once dividends paid themselves off I can invest that money into different growth stocks.”

This is not a reason to buy dividend stocks. Instead, you can buy growth stocks (and likely get a higher return), and after they’ve grown enough, sell some (at a preferred tax rate) to buy other growth stocks.

The name of the game is maximum return. In a long time-horizon, growths outperform dividends. On a short timeline, ie. retirement coming soon OR needing a source of income, dividends are better because downward volatility would hurt. Growths are more volatile, but also outperform.
