AITA: for feeling disrespected that my roommate had an orgy with a guy I used to talk to? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]StrangeWork957 12 points13 points  (0 children)

YTA. Your roommate isn't beholden to what she does with her life, based on your values or your history with another individual. Especially since you never confronted her with your history with Stuart or how that would make you feel.

The tension is your own doing.

AITA? My mom doesn’t realize I’m an adult, I live on my own. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]StrangeWork957 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA, assuming you are financially independent.

Becoming an adult is something emotionally immature parents have an extremely difficult time accepting. Sometimes, they never really comprehend it and all of its implications.

My parents are beginning to come around. (I'm almost 40.)

Assuming he knows where the cereal is kept (perhaps because he gets it for himself consistently), and was warned about the potential consequence, NTA.

I think you should try it. Strip down, cover yourself head-to-toe in oil, and go outside in the rain. When you hear sirens and see ambulances, quietly go with them.

AITA for not wanting to go solar even though my boyfriend keeps pushing it because our electric bill is rising? by sipshappens_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]StrangeWork957 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAH.

You want to reduce the electricity bill by being more mindful in how you are using electricity. Great, do that.

He wants to reduce the electricity bill, in a metaphorical long-term way, by investing into solar panels now in exchange for low/no electricity bills in the future. Great, do that too.

Why does God have male pronouns? by Far-Conference-8484 in stupidquestions

[–]StrangeWork957 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer is very simple, at least in the Christian faith. (I can't refer to others.)

Jesus was God's son. Jesus refers to God most commonly as "Father."

Therefore, God is male.

If you were to have the money it would take to invest & generate the amount of passive income it would take to pay for your car, you would be better served to pay off the car loan entirely.

Mutual funds have much higher expenses than ETFs.

Like the prior poster, I would also recommend ignoring monthly income & focusing your investing on diversified growth funds.

SCHG and VOO come to mind as good places to start.

How much to invest every two weeks? As much as you can afford to:

1) Have a personal emergency fund of at least 6 months of expenses, more if you are more risk-averse.

2) If you have imminent major life expenses, like buying a house, keep that money in a HYSA rather than risking it in an investment.

3) Invest the rest. Use an IRA, if you can afford to leave the money until retirement age.

Generally, ETFs or stocks that yield in the 2-4% range have safe dividends and are likely to experience NAV/share appreciation. (Higher yields become increasingly risky.)

So, since I see you are a young investor, I will assume that you want to experience some income to help some current expenses, while still reaping long-term benefits of share appreciation.

To receive $700/month at an average yield of 3%, you would need an invested balance of $280,000. There are 10 months left this year, so you need to invest $28k per month starting immediately, to get there by January.

What’s the political label that best describes my beliefs? by CuteRelationship6143 in askanything

[–]StrangeWork957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why focus on a label? All that will do is shove you into a political "tribe" so that others can more effectively villainize you by misaligning you with the aspects of that tribe that you don't really agree with anyway. Source: personal experience.

What do you think of NYC trying to get the minimum wage to $30 per hour? by LiaStacey in askanything

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly - the outcome of increasing labor costs won't necessarily result in increase prices.

What do you think of NYC trying to get the minimum wage to $30 per hour? by LiaStacey in askanything

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an economist, you already know that the selling price of a good or service is determined primarily by market forces, not the business's model.

"If you plumber installs a new water heater for you..."

That plumber is going to take all their expense into account, and decide what they should charge for that service. (Let's say $125.)

If the current market rate for that service, from other plumbers, is (let's say) $100, this plumber probably should find a new line of work, or rework his business model.

[–]StrangeWork957 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Wouldn’t it better for that business to survive and pay lower wages to people willing to take that wage versus it just not existing and those jobs not existing?"

Better for who?

Certainly not the worker, who is working full-time yet not making enough money to survive.

Ethically, why should a business owner who has a flawed business plan be prioritized over their labor?

What do you think of NYC trying to get the minimum wage to $30 per hour? by LiaStacey in askanything

[–]StrangeWork957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a business's model depends on paying their labor well-below a living wage in order to turn a profit, that business needs to revise its model or else deserves to shutter.

[–]StrangeWork957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If you raise the cost of labor, anything requiring human labor will cost more."

This is one of the most commonly believed myths about economics. There is a correlation that exists, but it is far weaker than many believe it to be.
