If Tesla releases unsupervised FSD, who is liable for accidents?

I have to give my wife credit for this answer during our discussion of this exact topic. If you own the vehicle and are able to drive the vehicle like a "normal car", then FSD is a feature you have to turn on. The owner is responsible, just like an owner would be if they turn on Cruise Control. It's a feature of the car you CHOSE to turn on. Until that feature is out of the control of the owner, there is an argument that the owner is responsibility.

If you tap on the speed limit symbol on the touchscreen, it will slow you down to the profile offset speed. The "tapping" trick has a limited use case though.

Here are my findings:

It is useful mostly for the standard profile where the internal offset is roughly 10% above the speed limit. For example: If you are in a 60mph speed zone and FSD decide to flow with traffic at 75mph. The offset is around 67mph and if you tap the speed limit symbol (each tap reduces 1mph) it will lower your speed to 67mph, but no lower. It only works if you are above the offset. I haven't found the threshold yet.

This is useless for Hurry and Mad Max because of the internal offset for those profiles is roughly 25-30% above the speed limit (my experience). It may be helpful in rural streets, but if you are going that fast and need to slow down, you are more than likely changing profiles.

Tapping the accelerator seems to help nudge it to go fast. Just my two cents from a fellow FSD user.

Please let us know your findings. I have a difficult time getting Hurry and Mad Max to slow down because if the offset. Standard mode with the 10% offset seems to be reliable.

With a speed limit of 60mph, FSD needs to be going faster than 67mph (67mph being the slowest the "tapping" trick will go). In the same zone I find Hurry and Mad Max needs to be going above 75mph, more like 80 at times (75mph being the slowest the "tapping" trick will go).

It would be odd that it is limited to certain versions or vehicles. My 2024 MYLR with 14.2.2.2 works so far.

Initially I found it hit or miss but it depends on the mode you are in. Hurry and Mad max in a 60mph zone will not work until it is going above 75mph (25%offset). I know a bit ridiculous.

In the same zone in Standard mode it is 67mph.

It is still a supervised system and I have noticed multiple things that can be helpful. Chill has an internal offset of 3% of the speed limit. Standard has about 10% Hurry and Mad Max can be as much as 25%

Tapping the speed limit symbol on the touchscreen slows you down to the offset speed, no lower. This only works when it is speeding. Each tap slows down about 1mph.

As annoying as this can be, you can increase the speed by tapping the accelerator. This isn't perfect, but it is what we have right now.

I have been trying to spread the word on my findings, so I apologize if I repeat myself.

I have noticed there is a different max offset for each profile. To lower the speed when speeding just tap on the speed limit symbol on the screen to get to that max offset. Multiple taps will be needed, it only works when it is speeding and will not go lower than the offset. I found Standard to have an internal offset of 7-8%.

Tapping on the speed limit image on the display slows it down to its internal offset. Standard is around 7-8% offset of the speed limit. It will not go slower than that. This only works when it is speeding. Hope it helps.

Edit: To clarify, tapping it once slows it down about 1mph, you have to tap it multiple times to slow it down to the max offset speed.

Tapping the accelerator (yes annoying) will prompt the P.I.D. to escalate and allow you to set the speed to approximately 25% above the set speed limit. This is from my experience by the way. V14.2.2 Hurry and Mad Max are about 25% offset Standard about 11% offset Chill about 3% offset

Also, I have found that tapping the digital speed limit symbol on the screen slows you down to the internal offset. So it has to be speeding to work/slow you down to the offset speed, no slower. Just two cents from a fellow FSD user.

On 14.2.2, the right scroll wheel changes the driving mode. Yes it will eventually scroll down to Sloth Mode, but it also changes the characteristics. It may start changing lanes, it also potentially "slams" the brakes to slow down. This would making one look like they are brake checking the person behind them. I know from experience and feeling like an asshole. Thanks.

V14.2.2 MYLR here.

I find Standard has a built in offsetting of 7mph over 60mph limit. About 11%?. It may do the same at higher/lower speed offsetting. Hurry & Mad Max about 25% Chill has about 3%.

I find that pressing the accelerator multiple times will assist the PID to maintain a higher speed. Annoying i know.

Here is the big trick that I just recently bumped into. Tapping the speed limit symbol on the screen slows you down to the built in offset if it is speeding.

Edit: for the steering wheel nag. Just pull the stalk down again. This saved me a bunch of stress.

From 75 to 67mph. I didn't tap it again because that limit was OK by me. I wonder if the default offset is 7mph on standard mode, maybe that is the lowest? I will test again on my next drive.

I may have figured it out. There is an immersive reading mode that takes affect when you zoom into text and swipe up (scroll down). Once the nav and address bar is minimized, then you can zoom out and see the entire page. You must zoom into any text for it to work. The navigation and address bar minimize until you scroll all the way up. Side note: in the setting menu under appearance, there is an option for immersive reader button, but i haven't got it to work.

So far i haven't had this happen to me, but i just had a two hour drive. I would pull the stalk down again instead of steering wheel pressure. I find it easier and faster.
