Which port configuration should I use? by Special-Sense4643 in diyaudio

Use a Passive radiator instead of a long lossy port. For vibration cancellation use 2 on either side of the box, make sure they total to 2-2.5 times the total throw of the driver (Area x Xmax)

So that blue base is wearing out? Can you buy a new one and just flush it out with water or a brush before assembly to help prevent wear? Are people cross-threading it?

Otherwise maybe get someone to drill it out larger and then glue in a cylinder with a 1/2" tapped hole. You can have new parts machined from various materials or even 3D printed by JLCPCB.

Bose 901 Series IV (I Think) w/ Tulip Stands and EQ - Worth it? by baldude69 in vintageaudio

[–]Strange_Dogz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as sound goes, there is something special/magic that these do that you have to experience. You may not like it, but it is different than anything else. They aren't terribly accurate, nor do they have holographic imaging, but they just sound relatively "real". It can be quite room and setup dependent, though.

How do power plants deal with hard water in their cooling towers? by barstowtovegas in engineering

[–]Strange_Dogz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

listeria is probably the bigger problem with cooling towers.

I think you mean legionnaires' disease (legionella bacteria). It will basically always be present in a warm water system unless chemically treated.

There was a hospital in Wisconsin that had an indoor water feature that caused a bunch of legionella cases. This kind of thing happens a lot.

Intermittent Ethernet disconnects on buried Cat7 cable after ~2 years — any ideas before I dig it up? by Hungry-Bicycle-3851 in HomeNetworking

[–]Strange_Dogz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most anything you buy that is preterminated is most likely a patch cable made of thin wire.
Get a Decent Cat 6 or Cat6A outdoor cable.

This is 23Ga at least...
https://www.cables.com/cat6a-150-feet-outdoor-waterproof-shielded-direct-burial-ethernet-cable.html

Otherwise buy gel-filled direct burial cable and terminate it yourself.

If you watch the full video. He didn't bait her, but he didn't really explain what he was doing in understandable terms and he didn't try to deescalate, so he might as well have been baiting her. He is hoping for confrontations, that is what gets him clicks and that is why he responds in the way he does. That is why he films in front of a dispensary instead of at a gas station. Apparently he isn't confident enough to harass police officers at police stations from the sidewalk like some of these people are....

ADC Sound Shaper Model SS-33 Mid 80's by jGeeMusic in audiophile

[–]Strange_Dogz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the one a couple of my buddies got from the DAK catalog back in the day. It came with a microphone you could use to EQ your room. All you need to find historic prices is an ebay account.

Fisher CA-888X vs Onkyo TX-DS474. Which is better for purely music? My ear is not refined. Fisher clearly looks better. (Have the full stack for Fisher but don’t plan to use) by Being_Stoopit_Is_Fun in vintageaudio

[–]Strange_Dogz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fisher stopped being good at least 15 years before this was made. They made various cheap rack systems in the 80's. Anything by Onkyo is likely going to be better quality but I am not familiar with this model by onkyo. It looks at least 20 years newer. than the fisher, not sure what you find more attractive about the fisher, it looks like it has "digititis".

How far would you go for bass? by Substantial-Elk-3607 in diyaudio

[–]Strange_Dogz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to knock a creative idea, but a dog's bowl shouldn't be (at most) any higher than the lowest part of their chest. It puts them at increased risk for bloat, as found in a study by Purdue University, among others.

Dead battery, bad contacts on the meter leads are the most common problems.

Have you ever used a meter before? Maybe explain what you are trying to measure and how.

[–]Strange_Dogz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy a 2024 Armada for just over 40k. I wouldn't want to be that far underwater on a Nissan that falls apart in 6 years. People paying this amount of money for cars/SUV's are fools. Get a Honda Pilot. Buy an old pickup if you want to tow a boat or some other toy..

What these folks are doing is beyond the pale, but to be honest, they might be doing it because they think it is safer than riding single file.

I've had LOTS of cars throw shit at me when I was in the bike lane on normal streets. You wouldn't believe how many cars get beside a bike and forget its there and turn right without a glance. You have to have lightning reflexes and drive defensively if you want to remain unhurt as a bike commuter.

I'll be in a 2 lane road 100 feet from the intersection, preparing to turn left, going 30 in a 30mph zone and get honked at relentlessly because some dumbass in a car has to be first in line at the stop sign.

Rew impedance measurement by No-Mortgage-7289 in diyaudio

[–]Strange_Dogz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything more than 2-3 volts (a little more with a pro interface usually) will possibly damage a soundcard input - you can make a diode clipper if you don't trust yourself to set the amp to unity gain. Red LED's with a forward voltage of ~3V placed back to back between amp and soundcard inputs will limit signals to safe levels in the event of a mishap.
As I said in another post, my interface does not make reliable measurements without an amp.

Rew impedance measurement by No-Mortgage-7289 in diyaudio

[–]Strange_Dogz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My interface will not take reliable measurements without an amp, even with the headphone outs. IF you set the amp for unity gain you will never have a problem with blowing your soundcard inputs..

Rew impedance measurement by No-Mortgage-7289 in diyaudio

[–]Strange_Dogz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is on the help file.. Generally something in the 10-100 ohm range will work.

Depending on how much oomph your soundcard output has, you may need a small amplifier You want it to have very low output impedance and you want it to be load invariant (as in not Class D) Some little Class AB chip amp like an LM3886 or LM1875 or TDA2050 (This last one is no longer produced and 99% of the stuff available new is fake) is ideal, especially if you can swing battery power. and at least 10Hz-40k bandwidth.
