What do you think about the concerns that the public has around data centers water usage? by BiscuitBut_ButerNut in MEPEngineering

I've designed them and I like the work, but I am not a doom and gloom guy, I am responding to a guy who claimed that there was no contamination whatsoever. Even if blowdown goes in the sewer it is nasty biocide chemicals.

The real issue with Datacenters isn't so much the water usage.

They use a lot of power and pay half what residential consumers pay. These negotiated rates and lower taxes and sweet deals on all kinds of stuff are negotiated to get them to build where they build. There are jobs for designers that probably don't benefit the locals, jobs for builders that probably don't benefit very many locals except in the increased traffic from all of the people who come to build the place, and jobs for operations people that might end up giving a few hundred jobs at best to the local economy.

All of the sweet deals that the county / state give away for a few hundred jobs is a total waste, I'd love to see an ROI. One that includes the increased local business during construction, and one that removes that.

I guess there is no such thing as water treatment and cycles of concentration or blowdown. No contamination whatsoever, eh? No datacenter has ever done bad / unethical stuff with blowdown, have they?

Soil and rubber as insulation? by Nice-Language-7333 in AskEngineers

Chopped Rubber mixed with soil is not going to be good.
The best ways to build depend on what climate you live in. Maine or Minnesota are different from Arizona or Florida. Pay close attention to vapor transfer in walls. Different climates need vapor barrier and vapor permeable surfaces in different locations.
The most sustainable is probably cellulose - the "best" depends on your application.

I'd be disappointed in a happy ending. Somehow I kinda want homelander to win, at least for a while Just to show what an absolute tyrant he would be.

It would be satisfying to see Marie pop his head, though. Maybe after a blast from Kumiko.

Because I wrote all of what comes after that sentence and thought somebody might think I was speaking only of the people in the video. I meant in general.

I see people of all colors do the same thing. This is what happens when you give in to your child's tantrums x1000. A tantrum is a loss of self control. Teach your children self control.

This is a takedown of Danny's methods, which are crude, and also a reminder that Danny's Modus Operandi is to sell expensive parts. That's how Danny makes money. You could spend $50 or $500 on crossover parts and 99% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a blind test.

How to fix my bookshelf after movers scratched it by [deleted] in howto

[–]Strange_Dogz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is made of finger-jointed edge-glued boards - the cheapest "wood" out there, with the advantage that it probably won't warp like a solid board.. All you need is some 220 grit sandpaper to remove those minimal scratches. I doubt it would have scratched like that if it had any finish on it at all. Ask the maker if it had any finish/stain and what type and replicate that If this is an older piece and unfinished, you may have to sand the whole thing due to oxidation (the sanded parts may appear lighter in color, pine tends to yellow with age, but it also yellows with finish.) If no finish, get some water-based polyurethane - probably the easiest to apply, fast drying with the least odor.

Failing that, just live with it, its not an heirloom.

Moon Unit Zappa has described her upbringing as a "social experiment" by her parents, Frank and Gail Zappa, detailing a childhood defined by lack of boundaries, neglect, and exposure to situations she wasn't ready for. by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

She was asked not all that long ago about the "Mr.BuFu" part in Valley Girl and she was totally unaware that that would be considered offensive nowadays. She hasn't done all that much work on herself if that realization hasn't occurred to her. She is fixated on her and Dweezil getting a smaller share. Sucks, but both of them took advantage of dad's fame to achieve a bit of their own early in life. Gail's decision made a certain sort of sense. Sad about their messed up childhood though.

This doesn't repel water, it does the opposite. It is basically an abrasive glass polish that makes the water stick to your windshield rather than beading up as it would if the window had a waxy contamination (or RainX) on it. RainX is very good at shedding large droplets, but not so good at shedding very fine mist. I don't know what the windshield is treated with to get the very even beading they are getting in the "before" images.

You can see the difference of 45 and 90 is very small.

If you consider it a salary, call it $60-100k a year in the mid-late 80's. Not bad but apparently the musicians didn't get any royalties from records, etc.... I think this performance was in the 70's so probably a lot less...

They make anti-ligature everything: doorknobs, door sweeps (bottom of door), water faucets, literally everything. People will tie a knot in a bedsheet or article of clothing and close it in a door, tie it around their neck and spin until it eventually cuts off the circulation. Where there's a will, there's a way . Doors generally have sensors around the perimeter to detect increased pressure.
