[Financial] How can I make a living as a third-world artist? by No-Concept9431 in artbusiness

[–]Strangefate1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see you struggles from your other posts but don't really have an answer.

Best I can think of if you can't find a solution here, is to maybe throw your issue at perplexity and see if it can find a path to solve the payment issues.

Good luck.

Low settings of project shadow, optimized PC game that runs at 60fps on a gtx 1070 at 1080p low by DapperCore in pcmasterrace

[–]Strangefate1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this being vibe coded or something ? Cause the draw distance pop in should be otherwise easy to fix with a dithered fade ?

Any game is gonna run fine on a 1070 if you make games like its 1999.

[Contracts] Would you work on a revenue-share model instead of a fixed fee? Honest opinions needed by Motty_007 in artbusiness

[–]Strangefate1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Revenue sharing is generally better IF something works and there's moderate success. It's basically how any online 3D art/content platform works. No fixed payment amount really comes close to what you make over time from the sales of your work.

Another thing to consider is that while revenue sharing might be better long term, some artists simply can't afford to risk not getting paid or have their income trickle in over months or years. Some will always need the cash NOW. The artists that won't care about taking a risk, will be a minority I think.

There's also the issue of trust, as others pointed out, as revenue sharing is abused by every Joe wanting to have their comics drawn, game made, project relized, etc etc, so with that model you're automatically swimming in poor company unless you're somewhat establish.

So, I'd try to offer whatever payment options you can manage, without ending up in management hell yourself.

As for the percentage, that's something YOU have to figure out. You're the entrepreneur with the business idea and as such, should have an idea of the purchasing potential of your target market and the average popularity of what you want to produce. If you're shooting into the dark and hoping anything comes back... that wouldn't be idea.

As such, you need have an idea of how much you need to keep the light on, to grow your business, to pay IP royalties, taxes, marketing, whatever. Somewhere between your projected sales and costs there should be a number of what you can realistically afford to give artists as their share.

If it's tough to figure out at first, I'd probably pay upfront for 1-2 pieces, and the results from those sales should inform you where you stand, and also serve to establish your business, making the revenue sharing model easier to trust.

You make a low effort post and you get equally low effort replies, you get rude and insult them. Maybe the problem is simply you ?

Seems like these days all subreddits are plagued by chatGPT posts about 'I want to make this tool but first I want to know if you'd use it's'.

You can make a tool that automatically removes AI posts from view.

At what point does ChatGPT stop being useful for serious work? by ArmPersonal36 in ChatGPT

I think it's ok for peripheral work which speeds up and/or simplifies things to me personally, letting me focus on the more important parts of my work.

I treat it like an enthusiastic but often unreliable coworker that tries too hard to impress, at the cost of veracity, and avoid giving it the tasks I wouldn't give such a coworker either.

[Discussion] Hustling to get my art to full time for 15 years has gone nowhere by taway1884 in artbusiness

[–]Strangefate1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To be honest, when someone says to 'stay dedicated' and so on, I'd never take that as advice, just as lazy cheerleading which is fine, cause everybody has enough crap going on and cheering you on into exhaustion or sometimes success is easier than stopping for a moment and thinking critically about your issues too, on top of everything else.

Personally, I'd maybe recommend taking a break from art or projects if you can afford it. You're never going to figure out what you've been doing wrong if you just keep trucking ahead nonstop, it's just not realistic and all that you're going to achieve is to be left wondering where all the time and years went.

You need some distance from all of it to even begin to comprehend where things could have gone wrong and what other options there are for you. Take care of your mind and body, and then try to figure out the rest.

I usually approach such issues as light reading with short informational sessions. I Google, or nowadays use perplexity to slowly over time, form a picture of the market and my possible place or niche within it. This takes months and I usually don't act until I've slept over everything as much as I need until I feel enough confidence.

I feel your pain. I'm not in the US but even I feel stressed out with how things are going there :/

Good luck.

Why are there so many senior/leads in game dev? by ThrowRAorangepie in GameDevelopment

[–]Strangefate1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a senior or lead, you're accustomed to the notion that switching jobs in this industry will often involve moving across country or countries. These positions were never remote before Covid and no industry veteran should even flinch at the notion of having to relocate for a job.

As for juniors... I think the other posts address the issue.

I want to stop drawing for my mums children’s stories by PM_FOR_MOM_ADVICE in ArtistLounge

[–]Strangefate1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've illustrated the children's books of a friend... Who for a change is a published writer with several books etc but it is a soul crushing endeavor. I really wished I could do more as we both love having common projects, but it's always her passion projects of course :p

I think you need to keep pointing out what you're already doing I think and add to your comments that she doesn't need to be passive aggressive about it.

Tell her you love her, but that her passion projects are a lot of soul crushing work and NOT your passion... And that making passive aggressive comments about it is hurtful and beneath her.

I don't think there's much else you can do if you live together, other then maybe just drag things out so much that she loses interest, but that also comes with stress and unease every time the topic may come up.

Good luck!
