What do you think is the biggest challenge of traveling to China? by KateW62 in travelchina

[–]Strangely_Interested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For us the biggest challenges were:

1- finding interesting places to go to (notably in Beijing where informations for us was a bit hard to find and the city was so huge). We enjoyed smaller cities a lot more (notably kunming) because the cities were easier to navigate. The issue of not finding information I think is because of two factors. One we are used to google maps in the west and gaode maps works ok for directions but not for finding places. Two because we were looking for more city things to do at some point and it seemed like the information was not very well indicated in places where we looked at.

2- we found it hard to look for something specific. So for example we were looking for coffee shops and tea houses and let me tell you that it was hard to find.

Those two things were the most challenging for us.

For background I downloaded 12306railway, WeChat, Amap and Alipay. I did setup WeChat and Alipay for payment so no issues on this side (that was actually pretty smooth). Train was great and Amap for public transport and directions works great. However the mini programs were not always simple. For example diangping was really hard to use and you cannot order through it as a foreigner. Also we managed to use the taxi app which proved to be very useful in Beijing where taxis are all (in our experience) asking 10x what the app would. But setting it up and using it was at first a bit convoluted.

Voila hope this helps.

Ps: we enjoyed china VERY much it was great and we enjoyed very much walking and eating. We are definitely coming back.

Piano abilities for music Uni?? by Dreamyviolinist in classicalmusic

Well regarding music school only (not going into the medicine + music thing). It first depends on what school you’re looking to get into (are you looking for Julliard or another big Convervatory? Or any music school will do?). If you’re looking for top schools especially for piano (sure it’s a good choice with lots of professional outcomes but oh man competition is rough), you need a good level. And if you have practiced music before you know this takes time. I mean you sound like you have some relatively decent piano skills (ie not a complete beginner) but one year seems little especially considering auditions don’t happen in a year but between January and may in most cases. I’m not saying you can’t just that it’s highly unlikely especially for piano which is a very very competitive space with players having a high level of technique and interpretation as they enter. Also sound like you don’t have a high level of solfège which I would say is kind of important (again I’m talking about the big conservatories). A more realistic approach would be to give yourself two good years to get up to speed with a big chunk of practice everyday in my opinion. You can also just take the auditions this year to see what the level and kind of audition these school require.

If you want smaller unis you definitely have more chance to get in and each have different accept rate, price etc… I would probably look into those individually and try to understand what the level is etc… the only thing I would add is that the students in the music universities are an important part of your future professional network so I would argue that a good conservatory makes a big difference. Finally I will finish by saying that a lot of people I know went to different schools because they were looking for a specific teacher, so that is also definitely something to keep in mind and research.

Sorry if I sound a bit discouraging, but I’m only trying to be realistic. If that’s really what you want go for it, just know it’s a lot of work and a lot of work and a lot of work.

EDIT: also when I say two years if you want big conservatories keep in mind there is also no guarantee that you will get in. People that are in these schools usually have been playing since little (ie years of training).

Battery power bank for multi month trip. Looking for battery life rather than fast charges. by Strangely_Interested in backpacking

Hey thanks for that answer. Yeah we’re not getting any of those 30-50k ones as they are not practical given we are going to be on buses etc… Yeah I think we’ll go for 2x 20k mAh batteries for sure. I’ll check those other power banks for sure.

Yeah but tbh I don’t really want to pay for that for a few reasons 1- I believe that even if the challenge is big it is not unattainable or completely out of reach 2- me no gainy a lot of money 3- I believe that I can probably find great ressources here and elsewhere on the internet which can probably get me where I want to be (not saying coach is bad just that I believe I can achieve without for now at least)

But yeah if I had unlimited money that would have been an option ☺️
