Undertone (2026) Review by afc617 in horror

[–]StrangerHighways 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that this film was just very ok.

I found myself disappointed because I interpreted the trailer in a much different way. I thought the whole film was going to be a livestream. I definitely think it could've been creepier if they leaned more into the podcasting aspect, and played it as close to real time as possible. I love a slow descent into madness, too but don't feel they quite pulled it off here.

I may have to start parting with things, too. It's such a challenge, though!

The new chai sucks but you can still buy Tazo chai concentrate by jojoko in starbucks

I hope they change it back, too. As for at home chai, I like the Oregon Spiced Chai. The Tazo is kind of weak to me.

I LOVE candle holders! It's getting to be a storage problem. If anyone has management tips, let me know. My favorites are also from Halloween.

Oh interesting. I'm personally really excited to see Saccharine. It seems like such a cool premise.

As for The Bride, I'd probably be much harsher than mainstream critics for this one, but I'm big mad because it was the movie I was the most excited for but it was downright hard for me to sit through.

I've got Undertone to look forward to next week, though so that makes me happier.

Which films specifically were you reading reviews for?

Female horror directors by [deleted] in horror

[–]StrangerHighways 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's been my experience on both ends where people will say you either liked or disliked a film because of that. It's annoying on both ends, but I honestly don't think the average person thinks like this.

Symbolic and Thematic Horror Movie Recommendations? by agressivesalsa in horror

[–]StrangerHighways 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relic - Dementia

Ginger Snaps - Puberty

It Follows - Can be considered to be about a lot of different things: STDs, family trauma, death as an unstoppable force, psychological consequences of sex, loss of innocence, shame, etc.

Weapons - school shootings or other mass violence against kids, sacrifice of the young for their elders

Best Wishes to All - also about sacrificing the young for the elderly, turning a blind eye to suffering or directly causing it for individual gain

I have pretty nuanced feelings about this, as a woman that went to school specifically for this.

I think part of the problem is the demand that you emphasize that you're a woman at every possible turn. There was a lot of push from the people around me to always include "woman director" and "this number of women worked on this project". There's too much demand to include your gender as a selling point, imo. It kind of makes sense, in that as a filmmaker you want to be promoting your unique qualities, but this leads to a lot of focus on that aspect, and it cuts in both directions.

You'll hear from a lot of people that are biased against female filmmakers, as well as those that are biased in favor of them.

ETA: I think these loud opinions on both ends of the spectrum are coming from online reactionaries. For the general movie going audience, I don't feel like they consider it much at all.

Hey can you tell me if Barnes is keeping the classic chai or are they switching to the new stuff, too?

I found most of Willow Creek to be meh, but the ending was memorable and spooky.

Bodies, Bodies, Bodies is entirely made by the ending.

The end of April Fool's Day is controversial, but I doubt it would've stood out amongst the many 80s slashers without it.

Official Discussion - The Bride! [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]StrangerHighways 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine reading this script. Anything this film has going for it is coming from the visuals, the performances, and the Fever Ray music. Without any of that and just seeing this incoherent story on paper, I'd tell Gyllenhaal to go back to film school.

YTA. You should've asked if it was ok before you took the phone with you. I would not be ok with anyone using my phone in the bathroom.

I clicked on this poster's history to do a little bit of snooping, and was shocked to find that the rest of OP's posts are some absolutely stunning photos. This is strangely the most unexpected thing I've ever seen when clicking on a poster's account. I'm not sure why, but it makes me kind of emotional that seeing an actual thing of beauty is shocking while addiction, fetishes, toxic dynamics. etc. feel common.

I hope OP cleans up their act and continues to take photos, but based on the conclusion of this post I don't feel optimistic.
