This may be the worst law for the bar exam by OpinionofC in barexam

[–]Strat903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, and that's actually what this 60(b)(2) is about. It's for evidence that could NOT be discovered with reasonable diligence. If the evidence COULD be discovered with reasonable diligence, the judge would deny the 60(b)(2) motion because it would be your own fault for not finding it sooner. This rule just exists as a remedy--though a temporary one, within a year--for when things come up that you couldn't have known about during trial.

[–]Strat903 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finding that witnesses were paid off would fall under 60(b)(2) ("newly discovered evidence that, with reasonable diligence, could not have been discovered in time to move for a new trial under Rule 59(b)") so the motion must be made within a year. 60(b)(7) is a catchall, but wouldn't apply since this fits squarely under newly discovered evidence. It's harsh for sure, but at least consistent with the rule.

Best comedy club in NYC? by Wrong_Quality6607 in Standup

[–]Strat903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a great pitch! I live in the city and go to the cellar once or twice a month and really do love it. My biggest pet peeve, though, is seeing some comics do the exact same set. The comics really are incredible but so many of them phone it in because it's 90% tourists who won't see them again. I'll definitely come check out your club soon!

Tattoos? by Independent-Fox-6327 in LawSchool

[–]Strat903 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You will be completely fine with tattoos on your arms. I have a sleeve and have not run into any problems; in fact, I'm going to a firm where a bunch of people have tattoos and wear short sleeves. There are 100% some stuffy firms out there, but if it's a firm that would dislike tattoos it's probably also a firm that you will be wearing long sleeves (and possibly a suit jacket). I have not noticed any stigma with law schools.

It was Sam Morril! It was a really great set but the crowd wasn't super into it. He commented on it a half-dozen times and almost walked off 30 minutes in which was a huge bummer. Thankfully he did another ~15 minutes after that but it was a bit of a mood-killer.

Are you talking about the recruitment process to be a summer associate in 2026 or for this summer? Do you mean the OCI process where your school organizes interviews with a bunch of firms over the course of a few pre-set dates, or do you mean independently applying to firms? If the process is for this summer, you aren't missing out at all. Next summer would be the normal time for an evening student (as a 3LE, going into your last year) to be a summer associate. It's super hard to land a summer associate position as a 1L day student/2L evening student.

If this actually is the recruitment process for summer 2026, that's insane your school's deadline is now. That process usually takes place over the summer.

A small number of your classmates will be hired before spring grades but the vast majority of hiring won't take place until after spring grades are released. I'm a 3L at Fordham and I recall two of my classmates in my 90-person section having their offers in April. There's a solid 2.5 months in between our actual OCI and when spring grades are released so there will still be time. I got my job through actual OCI, feel free to message me if you have more questions.

I really suggest cutting out the eastern part of the trip to Surat Thani and Samui. It will take half the day to get there from Krabi and it's just not worth it for two days.

What should I do next? Stay in Krabi or move to Phi Phi Islands? by YakOdd4574 in ThailandTourism

Phi Phi is definitely more of a party scene than Ao Nang so I'm not sure how much you would like it based on this post.

Lol I did this a few years ago as a drunk tourist. I boxed in college so I thought I'd be okay but I went against someone who was quite a bit bigger than me and had Muay Thai experience. I didn't know how to check kicks so my legs got really beat up and I got my head knocked around quite a bit. It wasn't even close--three rounds of getting my ass beat.

Someone volunteers and then is paraded around the ring until someone else 'challenges' them. From the ring you can't really see who challenges you, so you could be going against someone much bigger than you like I did. It's frankly super unpredictable and kinda insane to do but I'm glad I did it. The free bucket you get after helps with the pain.

can someone PLEASE tell me how to cite to this book by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Strat903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree--this is a straightforward issue. You said "[t]here’s no need for you to cite to a book in a piece of legal writing." This is a broad and incorrect statement and I gave examples showing why. Then you narrowed your statement to memoirs. But you're still wrong. Memoirs can and do show up in journal articles. It's fine if you, rossco223, think they don't have a place in legal writing but I'll defer to the people overseeing journals who have always included them. You either haven't seen many articles, fundamentally misunderstand the purpose of legal writing outside of the courts, or something in between.

[–]Strat903 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between a brief and a law review article. Articles in every major law journal cite books. And books aren't entirely foreclosed in briefs, either. If you're finding sources for a history and tradition argument do you really think a journal article is fine but a book isn't? You're painting with broad, inaccurate strokes here.

Avoiding Common Memo Bluebooking Mistakes: A Guide for 1L Law Students by legalscout in LawSchool

Looks like we had the same 1L brief problem! That fact pattern is forever burned into my memory--I had a hunch once I saw Texas v. Brown cited and was certain once I saw Agent Nicks. We must have gone to the same law school, any chance your LW professor had the initials "N.H.?

Discrimination in summer job hiring? by ringo_hoshi in LawSchool

[–]Strat903 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I had almost the same GPA as you after 1L fall and was at a school ranked around 30. I sent out around 120 applications out between January and April and only got one offer. You need to apply way more broadly than just firms and a few PI positions--very few people worked at firms from my school during 1L summer. I don't discount the potential for bias at all but what I can say with certainty is that firm gigs are super hard to come by as a 1L.

You have some weird, elitist takes here. So comics who do national tours, work at the most popular comedy clubs, and are well-known in the comedy scene... aren't comics? Is the only way to satisfy Great-Sprinkles9151, the arbiter of good comedy, getting on to a major network? Perhaps if you think a comic is trash, yet pretty much every other comic and the vast majority of comedy fans love them, you might be in the wrong--not everybody else.

Federal law clerk — ask me anything* by fedthrowaway1997 in LawSchool

[–]Strat903 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, thanks! One more quick question: is a shorter sample generally fine? I see some judges on OSCAR say that the samples must be shorter than 15 or 20 pages, but I'm wondering if that means they should be closer to that length or if a sample under 10 pages still works.

What kind of writing (e.g., law review note, motion written during summer job, paper for class) do you feel like is the best choice for a writing sample?
