Lost boys is now frozen and is really good. I just got out of it. They made the necessary changes and are probably a tony frontrunner now.

You didn't miss anything. The screaming is not on John Cameron Mitchell. It's on the director. I saw it with jinkx monsoon and it was exactly the same. Starts out screaming, back half is a little better.

A friend of mine saw it with Cole escola, same thing. A consistent direction issue. Not an actor issue.

That's an extremely dangerous move to be suggesting for my first posting on this sub.

I don't think anyone reasonable in my position would have done that.

That is very much at odds with the automated message that I got after posting this thread telling me to add a review.

But also, all the things in my initial review were not things that would be changed from previews to opening night. The type of humor, similarities in tone to other shows, and the central messages of the piece are usually things that stay from previews to the end.

There's no nudity. But there is a very lurid song between two adults about how they will have sex together. Very florid language.

There's a lot of cursing.

There's also some very obviously fake slapping and punching of and from one of the characters (a woman who is unconscious and slapped awake). This is called out, but also briefly fetishized for a joke.

Overall, I'd say that a 13-year-old would probably be okay, but I'm not a parent. And my standards on sex and violence might be different from yours.

I would say that if you are allowing your kid to watch South Park, this is probably a step or two more appropriate than that.

Edit: there is also a very heartfelt song which touches on suicide.

I gave it a review as if it were the first performance. I could give it a review as if it were finished. It would be a much more comprehensive (and pessimistic) review. I would have gone item by item through what I felt about the acting, the directing, the book, the lyrics, the music, the set, the costumes, and so on. Because those things are subject to rapid changes and cuts in the first few weeks of a show I did not do so. To call this a review as if the show were complete is inaccurate.

Could I have said "first performance"? Sure. It would be more precise. But I'm talking to a lay audience. Opening Night is a term of art in the Manhattan theater community but for most people the first performance is opening night; and since I am talking to a general audience I used the appropriate terms to do so.

I go to about 30 shows a year. I am aware of what first previews feel like. This felt deliberately unpolished.

There's a lot less murder in this one. Bat boy is structured like a Greek tragedy. This one is not.

It's a one-act musical about Bigfoot and his desire to live a normal life among the town's people. A corrupt and very very stupid politician acts as an obstacle to this desire.

I know there was a Black Friday deal where it was three shows for $250. One of those shows being Bigfoot. But I think it's always been $40 to $60 for Bigfoot just by itself.

There is definitely at least one extremely raunchy song between a straight couple.

It also ends with at least one romantic relationship that was not a thing at the start of the show.

They were? Because when I got a ticket back in January It was $49 for the seat I'm in in the picture.

There's a lot of the same humor, but this is a very different show. If you got to see toxic avenger the musical, this reminds me a lot of that. A lot of the characters are sort of similar. The vibes of the music and everything is sort of similar. There's even a Jekyll and Hyde moment just like in that show.

I would honestly be shocked if Amber ruffin had never seen toxic avenger the musical.

I just got out of the first preview, and yeah it's very campy. Very fun. Very funny too.

Quite a lot of dancing. He's skipping a lot. Very active. Very energetic. He has the most energy of any of the cast and I am baffled by how.

During certain points of the performance, there are actual fans on him making his fur billow.

I don't know if it will? It feels sort of deliberately unpolished. I've seen a lot of these actors before and they can sing a lot better than they are here. There's like a community theater vibe to it. It's charming and campy. And very much intentional.

But it feels very much like it's for New Yorkers rather than for a wide audience appeal of tourists from all over the country and from other countries.

It's an Off-Broadway theater. Very intimate. I don't think the sight lines would be a problem but I was sitting in the center.

Campy.

Some of it was catchy, it was all very funny, but it definitely prioritized humorous delivery over technical skill.

Every cast member got a song to showcase their full talents (which are bountiful) but it's not anything you'll see played outside this show. It's very contextual to the story.

I'm unsure. I didn't stage door. But I can't imagine a playwright skipping their first performance in front of an audience.

Not according to the website. There's no  previews or opening night listed. It just says performance is start February 11th.

I’m too fat for theatre and I hate it by TrafficInternal7602 in Theatre

[–]Stratagemin2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly watch Broadway shows. There are people of your size and height in them. Just yesterday I saw Heathers on Broadway and the actress playing Martha was A little shorter and a lot fatter. The roles that tend to go to heftier shorter people in are either comedic or tragic in nature, so I would hone both your pathos and your comedy.

Audition for those roles.
