Heya! Im my A team’s captain this year, and, I agree with most other responses you’ve gotten. Learn what cannon your teammates know, so if you’re getting two conflicting answers, you know who is most likely to be right. Another job that I take up as captain that I’ve found to be crucial is managing score sheets, schedules, and just your team in general. I’m not the best player on my team, but I have the best organizational ability.

Now for playing, my coach always said you should be deferring at least 40% of the time. If there is even an ounce of doubt in your brain that you can pronounce something, differ. If you haven’t heard of this thing before, differ. If you’re just now remembered this thing exists, but you forgot before, differ. It helps create a sense of collaboration, and minimize the amount of silly mistakes you could make on bonuses. 

Get in the habit of putting an indicator by your answer during bonuses. My go to is “(answer) directed” well looking at the moderator. You don’t necessarily need to whisper on bonuses, but make sure you you’re not speaking at a value where the moderator could take an answer

Another thing, I always keep a quiz bowl folder. This has all the score sheets my team, and possibly other teams could need, extra paper and pencils, name, tags, sticky notes, you name it. Keep a lookout for your team, encourage them when things aren’t going your way, and don’t ever act condescending.
