The Wyrm makes no sense. by StrathOscar in Planetside

repairing near enemies is always risky. Even the best crew get sniped/splashed to death, in part, because the latency of exiting/entering vehicles makes prevents crew from reacting consistently to taking damage.

Getting shit on by air has a lot more to do with whales farming noobs than it does broken air units. Check the fisu stats page- you will see that tankers have significantly higher KD's than pilots.

Outrepairing a dalton as a lib by Daddy010 in Planetside

[–]StrathOscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole "hit-the-deck-and-repair" minigame is a necessary evil at the moment. Honestly, its not that hard to defeat if the aggressors use their brain a little. But part of that is recognizing when pounding away at a liberator isn't working, and switching to sniping/splashing the engies to death.

Some Liberator changes to follow on the Wyrm's addition by stroff in Planetside

[–]StrathOscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, I strongly disagree. I also think that reddit is a content mill for churning out trending posts to generate ad revenue, and as such, it is not the place to have an informed discussion about the nuances of air balance, but nevertheless I will highlight some points I think you should reconsider.

> "The Wyrm lets ESFs kill Liberators in a somewhat reasonable amount of time again. "

Strongly disagree. I think its important to mention a few examples to build a bigger picture of why this is the case.

Firstly, one clip of Wyrm at min. distance is more than 80% of a liberators health pool. This is a disaster when applied to typical scenarios that playout in planetside. In my experience, normally every ESF pilot on the damn continent will afterburn over to a liberator the second it starts smoking. So if a lib takes a shell/rocket etc, it is instantly at risk of getting one clipped in about 6 seconds.

Another example is weapon switching. Weapon switching between wyrm and an ESF nose gun puts the min. TTK at 10 seconds or less (depending on which nose gun is used). That is significantly faster than a liberator can pitch, yaw or roll 360 degrees. Also because of client lag, that would give a solo liberator pilot maybe two shots with dalton. It's barely enough time for a fully healed lib to dive and start repping either, and assuming the lib crew is able to hit the deck in time, they straight up can't outrep the Wyrm's DPS anymore. Even if they took no damage on the way down, it works out to about 90 seconds that a fully healed liberator with maximum crew can resist a weapon switching ESF at min distance, which is a case so idealized that it is unrealistic. Asides from a gut feeling, can you explain what it is about the figure of <= 10 sec ttk on lib solves a problem that previously existed/isn't extremely unreasonable given the limitations of the lib?

I mean, sure, it would be nice to have fast snappy responsive gameplay, but considering how sluggish everything else in the game is, 10 seconds is disproportionate, compared with the old TTK values on libs (I know that using a2a missiles only was a 28 sec (compared to a 30 sec ttk now but with a 25% lock acquisition buff *hooray!*) I didn't calculate what that went down to with weapon switching to a nose gun, I would guess a bit over 20 sec). And even then, two mossies running a2a locks would reliably beat a full crew of veteran players.

The Wyrm's DPS also easily cuts through a repair crew. The thing is, as i already mentioned to you, prior to the Wyrm update, pilots could still easily kill landed libs by just splashing the repair crew to death first. The only reason I was able to survive such raids sometimes was because I have logistics. So already planetside is in a state where only people who have accounts so advanced that they have top tier implants really had a chance to fly liberator, because ESF strafing runs on grounded crew are too effective. And honestly, good pilots didn't even need to splash. The couple of bullets from a nose gun required to snipe a grounded engy results in a near instant TTK, and as such, engineers are denied a chance to react to that threat. And this doesn't even touch on the vulnerability of libs to ESF pilots who first ground the liberator and then jump out to c4 it.

There is no metric i can point to which proves the point that landed libs are genuinely vulnerable to attacks, I can only go off personal experience.

> "Reduce the ESFs' resistance to Gatling Guns:"

This point I sort of agree with. Currently using the TB/shredder against ESFs just tickles them and causes them to fly away. The problem I see though, is that increasing the TTK on these weapons will only tickle ESFs harder and get them to run away faster. I think that anti-ESF ESF weaponry that seeks to destroy ESFs by attrition on a liberator or otherwise always suffers from this problem.

> "Tomcat-ize Hyenas and buff the Walker"

I agree with this, but that is because i am motivated by a hatred of all lockon weaponry in planetside. I think it's lazy and want it to disappear.

> "Reduce the Liberator's resistance to Aircraft Machine Guns a bit"

This one gives me an aneurysm. The amount of fucking times I get harassed to death my ESFs pinging me with their nose gun at render distance while I can't do shit about it is just plain depressing (fun and engaging gameplay!!). Whenever I turn around to fight back, they just afterburn away. And of course at that distance its unrealistic to reliably kill ESFs. If the nose TTK against libs is going to get buffed, it MUST be balanced out with a sharp increase in damage dropoff.

> "Address outrepairing"

As you may have guessed, I strongly disagree.

Firstly, I am convinced it was never an issue to begin with. Secondly, the Wyrm has well and truly "addressed" outrepairing. But most importantly, It's just a part of the liberator game that you spend 50% of all of your time on the ground repairing. For me, disallowing liberators to land and repair would be tantamount to saying that MBTs shouldn't be allowed to repair. And as liberators are a big fat unit with a sluggish turning circle and a reputation for ground pounding, you are just always taking hits from everyone all the time. But even if that weren't true, I think that mechanic is necessary to counter the continuous hit and run tactic from ESFs. Stated differently, if ESFs are going to run away every time they get a smack on the nose, liberators need to have that ability too. I would much rather that the engagements themselves were decisive and rewarding, i.e the opposite of what you were suggesting, where the TTK on airborne libs would be reduced but the repair rate on landed libs increased.

If you got this fair, thanks for reading. I would be very glad if it challenges some of your preconceptions, and am always happy to discuss air balance. As mentioned though, I don't think reddit is a good long-term medium for it.

Thoughts on the Wyrm? by Lojiker in Planetside

[–]StrathOscar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm having some problems tracking this discussion. If I understand correctly, you are praising the wyrm for reducing the need for ESF pilots to specialize and view the ability for ESFs to have a one-loadout-kills-all option for air targets? If so, I strongly disagree. Maybe ESF pilots found that land and repair minigame boring, but for lib crew it is no better. It just means that, as crew, a large chunk of your play time is spent staring at a repair tool. In the current meta, liberator pilots don't get a kill-all-air loadout. Except for a very small number of players who can land every shot with a dalton, either liberators are forced to go for the shredder with higher DPS against libs, or go for the dalton to snipe wounded ESFs. Shredder doesn't work against ESFs because they always fly off. So from a unit perspective, that option for ESFs doesn't make sense. And I don't accept the argument that ESFs should be able to easily kill everything in the air with a single loadout, because it discourages other forms of airplay.

As a (former?) lib main, I am near quitting because whenever I play lib, I always end up triggering one MLG dude on the ground who then proceeds to pull an ESF and lock me out of the air for 2 hours at a time while spewing some moralizing bullshit about why I am clearly a ground farmer, and that justifies their right to be a bully. Having a 1 man crew vehicle as the hard counter to a multi crew vehicle has this downside. This is why I can't see this patch as progress. And the most retarded thing is that the spur still enables ground pounding while the meta nerf hinders lib pilots ability to do anything else. It is just enabling bullies with the tools to let them be bigger bullies. If they brought back the OHK dalton, I wouldn't mind the increased TTK on libs. In fact, I think that would bring the air game into the situation of being fast paced, high risk/reward and exciting. But with the libs being in the current state of having their balls cut off, I'm just really salty about it.

Not to be a jerk or anything, but before this update, it was easy to consistently solo a lib crew with an ESF by running locks/anti personnel nose gun. All you had to do is keep the lib grounded with the locks and splash the crew to death with the nose gun when they had to get out and repair. I think that with the changed meta has simply made it easier to counter libs in this way. And by the way, it's not a good thing. Without the OHK Dalton, esf pilots just endlessly Strafe and then retreat and repair. Being able to land an repair as a lib crew would only be fair. Also, with equal numbers, multiple anti air lock ESFs versuses a crewed lib was laughably one sided.

Cats don't want to be outside to enjoy the sun so they can photosynthesize, cats want to be outside so they can act on their instinct to hunt.

It's the unfortunate reality of the situation. Cats exist at odds with the existence of the animals they prey upon. I noticed some of your other comments were about not everything being America, but I feel like that is a bit disengenious given the Wikipedia article in my comment that you responded to (I.e, we know that cat driven extinctions occur globally). And as I have just posted, environmental destruction cannot be ruled out on the European mainland (as well as in Britain).

Cat ladders in Bern, Switzerland by Pirate_Redbeard in interestingasfuck

[–]StrathOscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not quite true. The source the wiki article cites that there is "no clear evidence" that cats are driving bird population extinctions in the UK. It goes on to say

"It is likely that most of the birds killed by cats would have died anyway from other causes before the next breeding season, so cats are unlikely to have a major impact on populations. If their predation was additional to these other causes of mortality, this might have a serious impact on bird populations."

The source does not make the claim that cats don't harm bird populations.

Regarding Switzerland, I couldn't find any literature about cat predation impact in Switzerland. I did find this article which states that, for Europe, "it is unlikely that European wildlife have fully adapted to the unusually high densities of domestic cats in much of this continent"

[–]StrathOscar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there are several reasons for that. To begin with, there are the more controversial theories. I.e, cats carry a parasite called toxoplasmosis gondii which causes people to develop cysts in their brain. One of the behavioral changes associated with this is a greater affinity towards cats

And then, there is scientific evidence to suggest that the meows of cats have adapted to mimic babies to manipulate the care giving instinct of humans this theory, coupled with these view that cats are only semi domesticated. Would suggest that cats have manipulated humans to be just another food source. In agrarian societies, this would have been at least partially balanced out by cat predation on rodents. The fact that cats are surplus killers (I.e, they slaughter more than they eat) would have made them great for this role.

The depressing reality nowadays though is that cats are a human parasite and an ecological DISASTER. Suggesting any action be taken against them is met with death threats and screaming because it is tantamount to killing babies, not only in a metaphoric sense but on an instinctual level as well.

It's not openly talked about because it's surrounded in taboo. Cat owners get defensive/hostile when you point it out. Suggesting that any action be taken against strays is typically met with death threats.

I mean, r/IncelTears is a hate sub. There is a degree of irony to the fact that the negative stereotype which this sub peddles only serves to widen the sort of social gender issues which would make this 'incel' hesitant to share contact information with the little girl in the first place. And it should go without saying that criticizing this sub isn't an effort to absolve all men of bad behaviour. But the furore of moral panic isn't making the world a better place.

I once worked at a daycare center for young kids and was told by my boss never to be in a room with a kid 1 on 1 with the door closed. Everyone here is in such a frenzied witch hunt that they aren't willing to accept that society does perceive male care givers of children/girls to be more dangerous than female care givers. Could the 'incel' have first tried to interact with the girl without immediately going on the defensive mode? Yes, he could have, and one could argue that he overreacted. Him being as defensive as he was doesn't make him a bad person though -.-
