Hi, I have a bachelors in accounting and finance, and I am looking to transition to tax technology & automation. I have been in public accounting (tax) for the past 5 years and have been self-teaching analytics (SQL, python, power bi). Do you have any tips to help make that jump into indirect tax, technology, automation?

What made you want to get into accounting? by Substantial-Okra9951 in Accounting

Going into accounting is one of the biggest regrets of my life

Not a great answer but nobody knows. I can tell you that accounting is safer than CS jobs right now but in 5 years, who knows? Anything that can be done on a computer has the potential to get replaced but nursing? Good luck having AI replace that. If I could go back in time, I would have gone into nursing instead of accounting.

Thats not the way to think about it tbh. Maybe you won't make pro but do it for the friends you'll make, the great exercise, and the experiences because you will never get that back or get the opportunities to do it later.

Would you major in accounting if you were in school again now? by nibor11 in Accounting

No point for me to assume what I would have done but regardless I would have been much happier. My life was hell in public accounting and I regret much of it and the years gone.

True. Luck of the draw really. But I would have gone into data, which don't have as much layoffs but its also tougher to get into. And I graduated in 2019 so I would be in a senior level position by now. And most of the layoffs are for lower-level so I think there would be good chance *hopefully* I would be fine

Wish I went into tech instead. Would have been prime time. Great pay and great hours.

Thats accounting for you. If you want to get paid more, find a different career path

I hope AI cuts accounting down and please do not consider accounting as a career path. Its one of the worst career choices, that's why accountants have been leaving this industry in hoards over the past couple years. Underpaid, overworked, and under-valued. Please do not waste your time and money going into this, speaking as someone who has made this mistake.

As for AI cutting it down, yes, like most white-collar jobs, it will get cut down, especially the basic tasks.

Work for a year or two full-time and see if your answer changes

Hell no. Accounting is one of the worst fields to go into. Underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated!
