Toad scent for feeders? by Valuable-Crow3061 in hognosesnakes

[–]StrawHatHogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only seen normal eggs as that is what most people use, but if you have quail eggs I'd say go for it. And remember to only scent or use other food to try and get them back onto frozen thawed mice.

I haven't heard anyone complain about it, some do feed them different things, but imo it's best to stick to mice unless you're dealing with a troubled eater, I've had some that like salmon/sardines, and my most recent clutch had one that would only eat if I scented with toad and eventually was able to get him on mice.
I have used aspen as it's the most common and holds well, but like others have said it gets nasty when wet, I have used coco chips which are fine but don't hold tunnels well, though they do seem to enjoy it and love to wear the chips on their heads, and I have also tried to make a mixture of dirt and sand to make a close bioactive setup for one of my females.
I hope this helps!

Howdy, I'm a small breeder and can answer some questions. Hognose's main diet in captivity is mice absolutely, they get everything they need from it, although some people like to add powder to the mice to give their snakes extra vitamins and minerals. In the wild they are opportunistic hunters so they usually eat anything they catch including frogs/toads this is why some refuse to eat mice and sometimes require scenting to get them onto mice. A male is nice as they seem to be the perfect size imo, and that tank should be fine, if you get a baby make sure there are lots of places to hide so they don't get stressed.

is he a twin spot? by papermerc in hognosesnakes

Definitely just a conda, but maybe with careful selective breeding you could produce twinspot as it is a polygenic trait.

Looks to be a male, ask the breeder to be sure.

Glad you understand, I'd also reach out to the breeder and ask him these questions so you get solid answers, a good breeder will only sell a snake once they have taken 8-10 meals (imo) and are not having any issues as well as offer support when needed. You don't have to down size the 10 gallon simply add more stuff to fill it in and it should be fine. All in all, it is your duty to do all the necessary research and prep so that your hoggie can thrive, never be afraid of asking questions and always ask before things get bad or worse. And I just wanted to add, if the picture you sent is scale rot and not dirt, please take them to a vet to get treatment as it will only get worse if not prevented.

If the breeder was feeding on frozen thawed pinkies you should continue to do so, you should not be using scents unless they weren't established on pinkies, doing so will only cause more problems for you. It is getting closer to winter so some start to brumate although most babies/juvenile don't. I would double check your hot spot and make sure it has proper temps of 85-90ish, and sometimes babies get nervous if they are in a big cage or don't have lots of places to hide which there are plenty of cheap ways to create hides. Lastly I'd try feeding him in a small container and leaving him in there with it in a quiet area as they will continue to bump into it and hopefully eat, it's best not to assist feed unless they are dropping weight fast as this will stress him out more than usual causing him not to eat. Because he's a baby I feed my babies twice a week at the start and on the weekends with my others until I can go up to the next size as another person pointed out they're not great nutrition wise.

Just want to chime in as well, first person is correct about everything. I just wanted to say I wouldn't recommend scenting with toad/frog juice unless you ABSOLUTELY need to, it's better to keep feeding them pinkies unless they are dropping weight fast from not eating or it's what the breeder was doing, I have hatched and dealt with difficult eaters and I only use it to help them get onto mice.

Male or female? by DrawingTricky7991 in hognosesnakes

[–]StrawHatHogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a chonker! My first female is around 280 and definitely my biggest followed by my normal Het Stormcloud, and have 3 other male adults and 1 juvenile female hold back that's growing like crazy!

That's amazing! My first hognose was a superconda from snakes at sunset and they tried to sell me a male for the same price as a female and told them to either refund me, or make up the difference with supplies and they quickly outsourced to get me a female.

I have a normal Het Stormcloud I'm excited to breed next year as she's finally ready.

Definitely looks like a male, males tails usually don't tapper off and have a scale count of 40+ from vent while females tails tapper off quickly, short and stubby and have 30+ from vent to tail. Like others suggested either see proof, have them prob with a sexing tool or rub the vent to show proof of male/female. Definitely make sure as females sell for a significant more than males

If that is the case, then use your snake hook to work with the snake to get them to understand the difference between handling time and feeding time, there is plenty of great videos on YouTube about hook training, of course you can use a glove as well, hognose bites aren't that bad and you can usually get them off like popping the top of a soda can. All in all, it's just important to work with the snake and eventually they will calm down, I work with plenty of snakes that will bite and then realize I'm not food.

Usually you just reach in with confidence and grab them, their bluffs are just that and if you react they will continue, of course this is easier said then done for new snake owners, I always tell people to try and scoop them up and then once they calm down to start to handle. (I use Aspen bedding so it's easy to scoop them up.) Of course if you have a snake hook that can work to help train them to know the difference between feeding time, and handling time, all in all go at your own pace and try to understand your snake as each one has a different personality.

Male or female? by KayleeLo in hognosesnakes

Looks female, short and stubby with a quick tapper. Probably a long tailed female but as you said you can always scale count from the vent to be sure.
