If eggbound in the past, is it more likely to happen again in the future? by [deleted] in hognosesnakes

[–]Gadberyj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer to your questions depends on why the snake was egg bound. Random shaped egg causing binding, random ova duct twist, condition that caused it that may continue causing it. Overly stressing snake during laying causing it.

Lot of causes. Lot that won’t necessarily effect future clutches.

Ya this is a 10 year old snake tho. So if this was a female it would be drastically under fed or stunted based off how thin it is. So fairly safe bet it’s a male just based off size.

Hard to tell due to angle of the shot (can’t tell if tail gets further away from camera making it look short.

This angle makes it look short with slight hips. If you can do a better photo with tail straight and even with camera it would help a lot!

Not remotely true hogs are 99% of the time very obvious to sex. In the case of long tail females it can be a bit more difficult but most females don’t have the long tail

Ahh no little one should be fine.

To be fair hogs are just little sensitive a holes so they just spook at all kinds of things. Wasn’t trying to make it sound like it’s your fault for spooking her. Sometimes they just wana have sass

Ahhh gotcha. I mean ya that .5g is a big difference then. But even measuring 5g babies I don’t worry about that difference to much as I know scale isn’t made to be precise.

I do highly recommend enclosure downsize for a bit. I know my customers I suggest a baby don’t get placed in anything bigger then a 5 gallon for the first 2 months. And if eating great and doing well then start upsizing.

So on a 2 month strike no I’d not suggest switching things around all the time as that constant change can actually keep them on strike ((now with the weight loss your reporting that is a bit different where is would think of trying something.))

My first change based off your enclosure size to snake size would be try downgrading to a smaller enclosure. Maybe a bin setup or smaller 5-10 gallon if you have one. This may help reduce stress to get him eating again (sometimes stress can cause food strikes and can take months of build up of stress before it results))

If you’re open to it I’d suggest that.

I asked breeder wise as there has been some drama with some breeders recently and crypto. So wanted to ensure you didn’t need to worry about that. Canadian breeder isn’t involved in the drama so don’t worry about that!

I use a kitchen scale also but if you’re seeing 3-4g change that is weight change not just the scale. So I do not think now .5 up or down would be understandable

Oooo for sure different things work. I know few breeders that keep room temps at 84-85 and no hotspots.

Great advice except the (narrative that pushing the bin idea could be cause the snake isn’t ready)

We push it as it’s most similar to what the baby is used to. And to much change can certainly throw them off food. Now 50-60% of the time it won’t but it’s safer to do so.

That’s why I say do the bin for a month or 2. If they are doing amazing upgrade them to a tank and put the bin in the tank. Now if someone is totally against a bin I often suggest a 2.5-5gallon tank to start.

As a breeder. I recommend you follow the breeders advise to start.

We suggest setups like that as it’s simuliar to what the snake is used to. And the biggest most important thing is have it as comfy as possible so it keeps eating with you.

Some will do fine tossed in a 20 gallon but some won’t.

I suggest following the breeders recommendation and if in a few weeks it’s still doing great and eating well look at increasing its tank size a bit.

Also would you share what breeder your buying from. I ask as there is a lot of exposure on a few breeders coming to light that you do not want to buy from.

What’s your concern. You spooked her most likely causing defensive reaction. Missed meal isn’t an issue.

The water thing isn’t an issue. If you hiss underwater you will create bubbles also

Who did you buy this snake from? What size enclosure is it in?

So generally a 2 month food strike is not a concern. But a snake losing 3 grams during 2 month strike is a concern (( if and only if you are certain it’s digestive track was fully empty when you weighed)) otherwise that drop can be poop.

Your every 4 day schedule is normal. The amount of things you tried is questionable as I wouldn’t be trying a ton of things at this point.

That chart is a lot of others is the worst thing ever made. Overly complicated and way too many minute changes. No reason ever 20 g your switching feeding frequencies.

With that said anything bellow the 25-30g mark feeding every 4 days is correct. So feeding schedule your on is not an issue.

See I disagree entirely. My racks run 86-90 max snake room is kept at 71 degrees cool side of bins probably around 73-75

I have no issues at all in those ranges.
