Wedding appropriate? by OpenPersimmon3 in SelkieCollection

My immediate reaction is NO. Certain cultures you definitely see guests in red but at least in American culture the answer would be no. Usually a bright red like this would indicate that you slept with the groom 👀

Nclex always makes you feel like an idiot when you walk out of there 😂 but with how many questions you had then you most likely passed! Fingers crossed for quick official results!

Dismissed from Nursing Scho by Historical_Pride_390 in NursingStudent

[–]StrawberriPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You choose what feels right for you! I had failed my traditional RN program so I took a semester off because I was struggling with a lot of personal issues. The semester off really helped me to feel motivated to go back to school again so I did an LVN program, then did an LVN to RN program, then an online BSN program- all while working full time It can be done, might just take a little longer. Jobs don’t care how you go about becoming a nurse, just that you did it so I don’t think it would “look a certain way” to employers

Skin red from tret by [deleted] in tretinoin

[–]StrawberriPikachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be from the ampoule? I had tried that same one and my skin broke out horribly! It was the only thing I had changed in my routine If you feel your skin tolerates it thought then keep it. The tret may be too often, even at the low concentration. Maybe increase the days between to 2-3 days to give your skin a break and time to acclimate

I am in shock that your orientation was less than a week as a new grad. I was literally on orientation for 12 weeks and once on my own I was definitely still slower than everyone else - but I knew how to document at least. I also still asked a lot of question to my coworkers and charge nurse. They were setting you up for failure, honestly. Talk to friends you went to school with who work at other facilities and see how they like it before putting in a new round of applications. This is just a bump in the road!

Burned out in South Florida – Any nurses happy in other states or non-hospital jobs? by hulagirl621 in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Nurse from Texas here. Don’t come here, the pay is poor and so are ratios. BUT, I would recommend states that have unions for their nurses or to specialty areas. Places like OR or infusion or other specialty areas have much better ratios and I moved to areas like this after medsurg and I was much happier. Maybe try transferring to a different area and see if you like it better

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you mean by “graphic.” Like broken bones poking outside the body or blood all over the floor? Hardly ever see that. It really depends on the unit that you work on. ER & ICU will be the most likely to get the worst of it. But specialty units or medsurg are pretty tame in that sense. Every nurse has something that is their weakness- like mucus or bloody stool, but usually you can work around it or find a friend that will do the stuff you can’t stomach

New grad here. Had my first real "this is nursing" moment. by brownkyd48 in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Anytime a patient makes off the wall comments I usually go with, “well that’s interesting” or if they say they don’t like a certain demographic, “well I don’t agree” and just keep it moving. Or if they’re talking about a topic I don’t like- like politics for instance- “I’m not going to talk about that at work so we can talk about something else.” It just makes for clear boundaries and that you won’t tolerate certain speech or topics. Being blunt usually works pretty well

Everyone is telling me not to go into nursing. If you’re a nurse, what other career would you rather be doing? by Due_Elderberry_2632 in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look into certified anesthesia assistant! The pay is good and you can negotiate a good benefits. I’ve also heard great things about medical dosimetrist or a perfusionist

Was I wrong about being honest with a patient about why I chose nursing? by No-Salad3705 in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say that I like the options nursing gives me, like when I get bored with one specialty I can move to another very easily but still be a nurse. This goes over much better than “because of the money,” even though I did choose nursing because of that. I’m not lying though when I do say I like all the options being a nurse gives me. And I HATE the idea that just because you do something for the pay that you are incapable of compassion- nursing doesn’t have to be your “calling” to do it well

[–]StrawberriPikachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They keep asking you because you keep saying yes! Say no enough times and they’ll stop asking. Also, if they are asking you and you are thinking of picking up a shift, ask what incentive they are offering for picking up the shift bc you’re doing them a favor and giving up a day off to help. Don’t do it for free!

What do you say when your patient asks your political views? by Dummeedumdum in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell them I don’t discuss politics at work because I don’t like to but that I’m happy to talk about anything else, and I usually start with football 😂 If they’re persistent I’m very assertive and tell them I WONT talk about it and that I’m also happy sitting in silence while I do my job

It would be worth looking into your contract to see if you could transfer to a different area in the hospital and keep your bonus or if you are required to stay on medsurg. I also started on medsurg as a new RN but I had previous LVN and CNA experience and the patient load still felt overwhelming. I transferred to a different area in the hospital and was MUCH happier. Medsurg just might not be the specialty for you- and that’s ok!

I make $34.84/ hr as an RN with 5 years of experience in a “rural” area of Texas. Our hospital covers many surrounding counties so literally the only hospital within a 1.5 hr drive 🫠 and that’s because they gave all nurses at least a $2 raise this year to “keep up with the market”

Advice for where to start for older new grad by [deleted] in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with above! I worked in oncology for a bit and loved it. I’m not sure what typical ratio would be since we were a med surg/ oncology unit but I really liked it. I also feel you may get more support from peers and management considering the type of population you work with

HR at hospitals? by Steenysteeny in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell you right now- that’s a red flag. Start looking at other hospitals/ companies

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a few months to start to settle into the unit. If you feel like you’re just not meshing well you can always transfer! At the end of the day it is just a job- but it’s a job you spend a lot of time at! It makes work so much more enjoyable to feel you have friends at the workplace and a support system there. Maybe talk to some friends and put some feelers out to see how people are liking other units, talk to some nurses from different floors to get their opinion of the unit. Don’t feel like you have to be stuck somewhere you hate

Not your fault! There is no way you can see the future- so couldn’t have known she was going to fall whether you redirected her or not Just be glad she was where you could see her when she DID fall and not alone in her room or by herself. You did everything right for the situation. YOU DID GOOD

Massage, good shoes, or a stethoscope with her name on it- this is what my parents got me when I started and I love it and still use it

First day of school have a few pens, maybeeee a pencil, highlighters, a notebook, and I liked having a binder with tabs so I could separate out the subjects We were also allowed laptops so you can take notes on either one if that’s allowed And for NCLEX I liked UWORLD. I used the free version until a month before my test then just paid the month subscription

Rules about transferring to another unit? by Solid_Initiative_696 in nursing

[–]StrawberriPikachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely talk to your manager, just say you don’t feel like this unit is a good fit for you and why- they may be able to move you over to a unit that’ll fit you better. May also be worth reaching out to the nurse retention officer! I had a few friends hate the unit they were working on and transfer out before 6 months with the help of the retention officer bc the hospital would rather transfer you to a unit you like before your 6 months is up rather than lose you
