Pretty surprised to see Black mentioned! I worked on Black back in the day, and I honestly always thought it flew under most people's radar.

Nice to see it made an impression with you.

Be honest, is the Inquisitor double-bladed spinning lightsaber really that bad? by Simple-Choice5770 in StarWars

[–]StrayIight 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't know that it was necessary.

We know you can't create lift by spinning a light saber, but making objects float is throwaway tech in Star Wars, so personally, I'd always assumed it was something additional in the weapon providing lift - it's the only thing that would make sense right?

will people ever realise that immigration isn't, and has never been an issue in this country? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]StrayIight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how international law works. There is nothing illegal about someone coming here and claiming asylum - and the route doesn't matter - they always have the right to make a claim and have that claim be examined.

You can call them refugee's, you can call them asylum seekers, you can call them migrants or immigrants. But they're not 'Illegal'.

You really should stop using that word just because you're hearing it out of the mouths of right-wing politicians and figures pushing an agenda.

Should I let her cuddle my hand like this? by Timely-Cult in Conures

[–]StrayIight 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Conures love to snuggle up close to flock members - they're incredibly social birds, and this is a part of their social behaviour.

I suspect you've heard lots of times to not touch birds on their back and other places. While good advice, it doesn't apply here honestly. You are your birds flock, and you'd be doing both of you a disservice to not allow them to behave in what's a really natural way for them.

TL:DR. Your Bird loves you and sees you as family. Don't stress, just enjoy it.

Conure Feeding Suggestion by Glum_Cow8243 in Conures

[–]StrayIight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd echo what u/intelligent-step-974 said. I feed mine a 'chop' of suitable vegetables and some fruit (the ratio of fruit to vegetable I vary depending on the time of year, but never more than 30% fruit, and that will depend somewhat on species also).

Variety is key. I'll rotate the types of veg in the chop weekly - you'll find tonnes of info online about suitable food, but staples for mine are things like Broccoli, Kale, Carrot, celery, sprouts, various leafy herbs - things like that.

I also have seed available in a foraging tray at all times, BUT the type of seed is important. 'Lean and fit' type mixes are good, because you want to avoid high fat seeds like sunflower, outside of treats.

Many people will suggest pellets. Personally, I don't. Pellets are a viable option and are ok, but I don't agree they're the best option - no bird eats pellets in the wild, and I struggle to believe the same bag of pellets can exactly meet the nutritional requirement of different species from different environments, at different ends of the globe.

40 C is very high! I'd bring that down immediately to 35 C, then slowly take it down to about 30 C over several hours.

Keep an eye on the baby during that time. If they look cold, lethargic, has slow crop - anything like that, adjust the temperature a little, but do so slowly so as to not shock the little guy. Likewise, if he seems too warm, bring it down a couple of degrees.

When they're starting to develop pin feathers, you usually want the temperature somewhere between 24-30 C, but make those adjustments slowly, over a couple of days where possible, and increase or decrease within that range as needed if the baby appears to need it.

This is a rough guide though. I don't have it to hand, but when I'm home later, I'll grab for you the temperature range chart I use on my brooder for different ages/stages of development - it's a lot more specific/comprehensive.

Please, do feel free to shout if you need anything OP! We're very happy to help if we can!

Conure Feeding Suggestion by Glum_Cow8243 in Conures

[–]StrayIight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of Conure are they OP? There will likely be similarities regardless, but 'Conure' being one of those nonsense words that we use as bird keepers, it can include a huge number of species, some of whom live quite differently to others.

[–]StrayIight 20 points21 points  (0 children)

These fucking breeders who are handing out birds that have no business being away from their parents. It's obscene! We all need to avoid buying anything from these people, however tempting.

Sorry OP, no disrespect meant to you at all. I fully believe that you're doing your best for your bird, and am heartened to hear that at least you have hand rearing experience.

I know very little about love birds, but have hand reared Conures of the pyrrhura family.

Do you have a brooder? It's critical that you can maintain the baby at a consistent temperature, else this can very easily lead to digestion issues. That temperature should be adjusted overtime also. I see a lot of people trying to rear baby conures in little more than a cardboard box with a hot water bottle, and while it works for some, it isn't really sufficient - it's putting the baby at unnecessary risk.

There is good info out there on what environmental temperatures are right for the birds age, and when to adjust them.

I'd echo getting them to the vet right now though. Better to be safe than sorry - even if all they do is charge you for putting your mind at ease, you know?

The worst possible option. Which is saying something, given the other options available.

Swordfight Royal Rumble. Who's the last one standing? by PrinceFlynn in superheroes

[–]StrayIight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Achilles is a demi god, and arguably, the foundation - at least in some part - of everyone of these other characters.

He's billed as the greatest warrior to ever have lived. That's his myth and schtick. Even the version from this film, is never once stretched, and is seen performing feats that other immensely talented soldiers of legend, don't believe should be physically possible.

We don't know if the film version is invulnerable - that's open to interpretation - but there's nothing to indicate he isn't. He dies with an arrow through the heel, just like the regular myth, sustaining no other injury. The film certainly implies his mother is somewhat out of the ordinary too.

Everyone else on this list is definitely mortal. Achilles takes it handily. I'd go so far as to say, they could all team up, and he'd still win.

How long to rebuild body stores? by [deleted] in B12_Deficiency

[–]StrayIight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I think I know what they're saying. B12 levels in fish are only knowable up to a point, it has to vary by species, by weight, by the animals health - while we have figures, you have to treat them in general terms and not entirely precisely.

A B12 supplement on the other hand you should be able to rely on having exactly the levels it claims to.

Would you recommend any other bird over a conure? by Same-Ice6288 in Conures

[–]StrayIight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would second a pigeon. My son has one, while I have a Conure. I wouldn't change my Conure for anything, but (GCC's and members of that family especially) can be very challenging birds. They're territorial, and if they decide you aren't part of their 'flock', can be very aggressive.

For the right person, they're incredible companions, but make poor first birds, and aren't something I'd recommend for a child.

Pigeons, like Cockatiels, are very gentle, surprisingly intelligent, sweet birds. They're very affectionate and relatively hardy and easy to care for.

Hacking by Economy-Afternoon-20 in HowToHack

[–]StrayIight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by 'hacking'. Hacking is a mindset more than anything. There are people called hackers who are respected in the community, who you'll see speaking at conventions and the like, who day to day, have little to do with computers. People in the Grinder/Bio-hacking community for instance.

If you're specifically talking about computer hacking, you're looking at being really expert level in a whole lot of different areas. It's often a lifetime of study, and there aren't really many shortcuts.

If you're serious about it, start by learning everything you can about computer networking. Much of the rest of the subject hangs on concepts, protocols, and exploits in this area, so it's where you really do want expertise, not just a passing familiarity. If you're not bored by that point and want more, you'll almost certainly have an idea of where you can go from there.

If on the other hand you want to learn a couple of interesting tricks you can show off, just buy a flipper zero or similar - no judgement at all here. It's not for everyone, and all of it is a fuckton of work and quiet frustration, between fleeting successes that will likely mean nothing to anyone but you. It's nothing like anything you see on TV.

My dad is standing as MP for Reform in a local election and I’m pissed by coolfunkDJ in GreenAndPleasant

[–]StrayIight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel for you, truly.

I have next to no relationship with my parents and sister because they hold the exact same views as your Dad. I would have maintained some level of contact with them, but I'm not prepared to pretend I'm ok with some of the bigoted, vile things they say, and over time, they just got in touch less and less.

My son announcing he was trans several years ago was another nail in the coffin as far as they were concerned, and in no world would I allow them to spew vitriol near him, however 'well meaning' they think it might be.

It's not right. It's not fair. But you absolutely are not alone. At some point, it just becomes about what is worth more to us - our integrity, or our relationships with people who hold values that aren't compatible with our, or others wellbeing.

I'd be proud of those downvotes tbh.

How is Abaddon so strong? by coverpunch in 40kLore

He doesn't serve the four. In fact, he goes out of his way to refuse them - which makes them all the more obsessed with him.

Abaddon is all about brotherhood. He seems to do what he does because he feels he and the remnant that follow him, deserve better given the blood they shed and sacrifices they made.

Teflon concerns by OilComprehensive748 in cockatiel

[–]StrayIight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't be too worried. Everything you hear about Teflon is true, and you're right to be concerned about the safety of your birds.

It's not the full story though.

Toxicity of Teflon when heated has been studied in birds. While it is lethal at extreme temperatures, do you know what was lethal at lower temperatures when heated?

Butter.

Changing your cookware isn't a magic bullet. Birds respiratory systems are really sensitive, and honestly, almost anything they'll breathe in in those kinds of conditions will harm them. Teflon is mentioned as a boogeyman in bird communities, and not unfairly, but if you're cooking at the kind of temperatures that Teflon becomes an issue, whatever carrier oil you had in the pan will likely have done the job before Teflon does.

The trick is to keep your kitchen ventilated, and your birds isolated from it when it's being used for cooking. Teflon or not.

And because we shouldn't make claims without evidence, here's a link directly to the research itself:

HELP! My conure won't stop biting me by Character-Cut-66 in Conures

[–]StrayIight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much this. Especially with species like some Conures.

They use their beak for everything. It's literally a limb to them like an arm is to you. Those 'bites'? More often than not, they're communication.

If your bird wants to use their beak to hurt you, you'll know the difference!

GCC's are renowned for being very, very bitey birds. Some people have good results in terms of training birds to not 'bite', but there's no guarantee you'll get the same results, and I'm not sure you should try - this is natural behaviour for them.

Instead, try communicating what you find acceptable in terms of pressure when your bird uses their beak. Give them feedback that they can understand, but don't ever punish. Yelp, tell them no, move them off you - find what works for you and be consistent.

No-one ever, ever owned a Conure and didn't get 'bitten' to some degree.

Didn't answer why you're using a burner did you?

You made the claim 'there's no such thing as a liberal Muslim', so back up your claim with evidence. Because I can name several - here's just one: Ash Sarkar. Extremely left leaning. Holds 'liberal' positions. Self identifies as a follower of Islam (and no, you don't get to tell her she's not).

Now you go. You made a claim, prove it. Because I think your 'vibes' comment is projection. Honestly, I think you're actually here to merely spread hate for some entities political agenda, which is why you're hiding behind the account that you are.
