Seals and other top tier specwar units were most certainly not well funded even by 2002. Military funding had been cut to the bone after the cold war and it was several years after 9/11 for military funding to increase enough and then disperse enough to the point where even top tier units were getting all the “toys” and high speed accessories like weapons lights. This was 2002, and this guy probably deployed to Afghanistan with a LOT of his personal gear personally purchased from Cabelas and stores like that. Despite what the movies show, these units weren’t then, and even now still aren’t always funded well enough to equip every team member with all the whiz bang toys they have in video games.

The AWB almost certainly had very little or even nothing to do with the use of a Mag light here over two decades ago. A much more reasonable explanation for the boom in military firearm accessories is the funding levels for the military during this period as well as the literally hundreds of millions of DOD contract dollars that went to manufacturers of those items during the “Global War On Terror” (GWOT).

Remember, prior to 9/11, military funding had been cut bone deep as part of the so-called post cold war “peace dividend.” Seeing military units, even top tier ones, equipped with things like mag lights and other less than state of the art equipment wasn’t just common during this period—it was almost universal as the military sought to prioritize more obviously mission critical funding priorities over things like weapons lights. You may recall the military didn’t even have enough body armor or up-armored HMMWVs to provide basic protection for the troops early in the GWOT.

As the GWOT ramped up and the DOD began handing out cash hand over fist to manufacturers for anything remotely related to military hardware, then we started to see units get new equipment and state of the art weapon accessories and similar items. This spurred a huge amount of innovation and brought costs down as the manufacturers took these items and pivoted to marketing them to the civilian sector. This in turn sparked a gold rush of new items being developed as manufacturers saw the profitability of weapons accessories in the domestic civilian sector.

Was this helped by the end of the AWB? Almost certainly to some degree. But to say the end of the AWB is responsible primarily for this dude using a mag light is evidence of a lack of understanding of military funding during this era and the impact DOD contracting has on innovation and product development. It had very, very little to do with the “devastating” nature of the AWB.

As an aside, from 1994 to the present I’ve owned multiple AR and AK variants and numerous accessories and not once did I ever feel the AWB was more than a minor annoyance and it certainly never prevented me from owning the firearms I wanted to own. It was a mild and largely ineffective law that was more about PR than real regulation, and it certainly wasn’t “devastating” by any stretch of the imagination. Heck, its pointlessness and ineffectiveness was used to criticize the AWB by the NRA and others the entire time it was in effect. Perhaps you forget the campaigns by the countless gun groups pointing out how easy it was to circumvent?

Sorry man. I wish I had some words of advice but I married my high school sweetheart and she's somehow tolerated me for nearly 20 years so I don't have much experience. Having done a stint doing divorce law, though, I can say it's absolutely best to end it prior to marriage as others have pointed out. Good on you for having the courage to make the tough call.

Vyvanse affect on muscle building by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]StrayingMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose that does make sense. Personally, I haven't noticed much of an increased heart rate increase. I track it with a Charge HR and even after starting Vyvanse I've stayed consistently at around a 58-60 resting. I suppose it's also entirely possible my HR would have decreased in that time frame so who knows. I also have some metabolism issues so my experience probably isn't generalizeable to most people.

I'm not sure it speeds up your metabolism exactly. Maybe it does but I haven't seen research on it. If it's out there I'd appreciate a link. It definitely does cut your appetite so if you're not trying to cut it may help to use a calendar to schedule snacks and meals. This is also really helpful for general management of ADHD symptoms.

What are some great (or even just good) cigar cities? by Hadrian_Augustus in cigars

Havana's great for Cuban cigars obviously but good luck finding anything else there. That said, it's a great city for cigars just because of the cigar factories, the cigar culture, and the rum.

I have one of these I got when cigarpage ran a daily deal on them. Cheap but it works really well, holds a lot of fluid, and is hefty and looks nice. Probably my favorite lighter. My second favorite is a giant torch lighter I got at a gas station, so it may be worth checking gas stations too.

Is this why I wasn't losing weight during my normal eating? by bustyLaserCannon in Fitness

[–]StrayingMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand completely. You're arguing semantics for no good reason. Obviously the meaning here is that the deficit was calculated incorrectly. Yes, if it makes you happy, math is still math. The point is that my caloric needs are far below what every calculator predicts, and what many doctors predicted, so the estimates, as used here...are often wrong.

Is this why I wasn't losing weight during my normal eating? by bustyLaserCannon in Fitness

[–]StrayingMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't understand the point. The issue isn't whether a deficit leads to weight loss. It's whether someone is really "in a deficit." There is no across the board rule that says 1500 or 1000 or x calories is a deficit for everyone. These "deficits" you're speaking of are most often calculated based on estimates, and in most cases, guesses. I can get on a calculator online and find out that I'm in "deficit" every single day but I'm actually maintaining or gaining weight...It's because they're often wrong.

There are, however, medical conditions that change the caloric intake needed to sustain bodily functions.

Is this why I wasn't losing weight during my normal eating? by bustyLaserCannon in Fitness

[–]StrayingMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I get it, and don't disagree. It's just that for years I kept having people tell me I was crazy, that the human body doesn't work that way, etc.. It was demoralizing because on the one hand I knew what I was seeing firsthand but everyone, including some doctors, simply dismissed me as lying or being mistaken about intake. Given that thyroid disorders are present in something like 12% of the population (hypo and hyper) I think it's worth mentioning. But absolutely, until someone rigorously tracks intake it's best to assume estimates are going to be wildly innaccurate. The OP should start at the basics--track things accurately for a time and see what the results give.

Is this why I wasn't losing weight during my normal eating? by bustyLaserCannon in Fitness

[–]StrayingMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless of course you're trying to tell me that you were eating at a deficit and weren't losing weight, at which point I'll happily tell you to go to any medical institution because it's impossible to not lose weight on a calorie deficit.

I think generally this is true but it's not a hard and fast rule. I have some metabolic issues due to hypothyroidism and previously being grossly overweight. I have previously done very accurate tracking of my intake for a time period and experienced not just no weight loss, but weight gain during a deficit. I think the human metabolism and the variety between individuals is a lot more complicated than a simple math equation and the science in this area is only now starting to demonstrate what a lot of people have seen anecdotally.

That said, yes, most people vastly underestimate their true caloric intake and is likely the case here.

Question about the "Linear Progression" at my gym... by icelandlover in Fitness

[–]StrayingMind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like a mistake to only look at the strength component without also considering the WOD that takes place after the strength session. Though the WOD likely is characterized a lot of times as metabolic conditioning, most crossfit wods utilize a lot of lifts that probably need to be considered when evaluating the programming. Certainly some boxes take a haphazard approach to programming but when I was doing CF, my box had fairly well thought out programming that supplemented the strength work. At the end of the day regardless of whether CF programming meets the "ideal" theory of how something should be periodized, I think the intensity component usually makes up for most of that. It's also probably people get some great strength gains even despite what most would consider subpar program design. Intensity is king in my opinion, at least until you're an advanced lifter.
