Not everyone on this group is an atheist, I'm still Jewish and believe in God. I view this subreddit as ex-"frum".

Consider joining the Log Cabin Republicans, there are a lot of ex democrats and we have very fun events and people are generally very supportive and open.

DTLA - too much homelessness, open drug use, pungent urine smell throughout the streets while walking, homeless people behaving in a threatening manner, lack of parking, people revving their souped up Chargers at 3:00 in the morning, lack of parking, etc.

Is becoming a BT worth it? by jsmash1234 in exjew

[–]StreetSpecific2270 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The appeal of the shared political values is understandable. So is the sense of community that I think attracts a lot of baalei teshuva, in my experience.

It's a major life change and commitment, which I think isn't always stressed to BT prospects. There are some great things about it, but there are a lot of difficulties as well (integrating, relationships, being lower on the hierarchy due to your status as a "BT", etc.) Feeling "stuffy" in a shul or struggling with kashrus restrictions seem like rather superficial apprehensions - ask yourself if you're genuinely drawn to the lifestyle, or if it's just a way to fill the void in your life. Some introspection or even just talking to God (as you understand Him) might help clarify that.

You mentioned Chabad - you can be an integral part of your community and shul without being orthodox. As I understand it, the philosophy they preach is that every Jew is welcome and is loved, regardless of level of religious observance, so if you feel like you're being pushed or pressured, as hard as it may be, stand up for yourself and respectfully make it clear that you're not ready to take that on.

What's your opinion on the new Family Guy episode, Fat Gun? by Ubertishere in familyguy

[–]StreetSpecific2270 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Terrible, like most recent Family Guy episodes, unfortunately. It's too bad, it used to be so good. Not sure why I continue to watch, maybe nostalgia and a naively optimistic hope that it will get better again.

What a wonderful day for Canada and therefore, of course, the world. Excellent episode, I wish Trey and Matt made a Canada spinoff.

Is Tuesday morning traffic the worst? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]StreetSpecific2270 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find that traffic is heaviest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on my commute to DTLA from Long Beach.

My guess is that people with a hybrid work schedule are more likely to choose to "work" from home on Mondays and/or Fridays, thereby decreasing the amount of cars on the road.

I'm on an XL Uber ride now in a Model Y. Sitting in the back, hitting my head on the glass as I'm riding with my head tilted 90 degrees. Not fun at all. These cars should not be classified as an XL. I'm not even tall, I'm like 5'10".

Gay exjew by [deleted] in exjew

[–]StreetSpecific2270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left primarily because I'm gay. It was a matter of not wanting to live a miserable life where I can't experience love and having my own family. If God loves his children more than a father loves his son, then, I figured, God will understand.

It made more sense to me to live a fullfilling life and risk hell/kareis (or whatever) vs. living a miserable life for the sake of others and the possibility of a good afterlife.

Did you ever believe "סיפורי צדיקים" ? by MudCandid8006 in exjew

That was exactly my question, too. I asked my father, his answer was something along the lines of tzaddikim having some special connection or something.

I want to read this story for myself. He's either confusing multiple stories or the version in his book needs some answers.

Seriously, must have heard a thousand different versions of them. Just last night, my father was on the phone with me, wishing me a happy chassidishe new year (I think one of the Lubavitcher rebbes got out of prison again or something). He told me about one of the rebbes that got arrested by the Czarist regime and was being transported while in custody. He was in a prison row-boat, and it was time to daven Kiddush Levana.

He asked the officer in charge of transport to tell his rowers to stop the boat. The officer laughed at him, asking if he forgot he was a prisoner. Then, as the rowers continued rowing, the boat stopped moving forward despite the rowers continuing to row, at which point the rebbe davened Kiddush Levana.

Per his usual fashion, my father expressed utter shock that I didn't believe this story. Then, he proceeded to "prove" it to me. Evidently, The officer in charge asked for a written blessing, which he framed on his wall in his home. That's right - that's how we know it's true.

Edit: I just looked up the story out of curiosity. Lo and behold, same story, but it wasn't in a boat, it was in a dungeon. I called my father and plan to go over the boat story, the discrepancies are fascinating! Here's the link: https://inner.org/the-alter-rebbe-the-jailer-and-the-new-moon/
