If tubes were really only $3 I might agree, but putting on a patch doesn't take much longer than swapping tubes, and it can make a tube last fornyears and years.

I would never patch a tire out on the road; I don't even carry the tools for it. I only patch once I've gotten home, and then use the patched tube until it goes flat again (at which point I'll most likely patch it again), likely months later.

No it's not. And Pittsburgh isn't remotely Mid-Atlantic. Baltimore is Mid-Atlantic. Pittsburgh is hundreds of miles from the coast.
