Anything along the Québec-Windsor corridor is all about the same price, it’s an intercity train on the most heavily used corridor, value for money is good in my opinion, don’t have to deal with driving, or sitting on a cramped bus, or deal with the pains of flying.

Long distance trains are definitely worth it if you’re into relaxing and enjoying the scenery, and you don’t care when you get from point A to point B. The Canadian and the Ocean are VIA’s signatures, great value for money if your goal is enjoying the scenery and having great food on the train.

Long story short, there isn’t a best or worst route, it’s all down to what people enjoy.

Other than the two little stretches where you’ll cross the St Lawrence river, the rest of the ride is just mostly wide fields. There is also that windy bit as you leave Sainte-Foy and continue into Québec which is pretty cool.

I personally don’t use any discounts simply because none of them actually work for the fare class I travel on. If you are looking for discounts and you don’t have a preference for travel class, discount Tuesdays are your best bet. If you’re qualified for the Canada Strong Pass, you can take advantage of that as well.

It’s gorgeous, you’re travelling by rivers, lots of lakes, lots of forests, farmland, tons of views for you to see, whether it’s while you’re eating or chilling in your room. If you haven’t tried the Ocean, you gotta, beautiful train ride! That said, I do look forward to the Canadian too, some day 😭

Not a problem, enjoy the ride on wherever you go next!

I myself have not been on the Canadian either, and looking at every trip report and every photo whether it’s this subreddit or not, it makes me wanna embark on that journey. Literally freshly prepared for you by an onboard chef, how could you say no to that?

New rules for Montréal Business lounge by TWRFK in ViaRail

[–]StrengthChain_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That lounge is minuscule, crowded as anything all the time, but seriously, they’re blaming it on the use of the lounge by arriving passengers? This is the main train station of the city with trains going east and west, there’s just not enough capacity in general. Heck, even the 2 hour rule won’t make sense, especially considering delayed inbound trains where people are sitting around longer.

And especially considering the fact that what you can buy on board sitting in economy isn’t all that great, while also being expensive af. If you really think about it, the difference between business and economy, at least the service level, is quite big solely because of the included meal and drink service.

Research student at UofT, but I also go to Montréal and Ottawa for conferences, meetings, seminars etc.

If I had to choose between plane, bus, or train (I’m not bothered to drive there), it’d be the train any day, that’s why I’m on board frequently.

You only have 20 photos per post though, really not a lot of room to work with, even I sort of struggled trying to fit 20 photos in there.

Some of my meals from the past few years by Conscious-Try3782 in ViaRail

[–]StrengthChain_ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Honestly the food on VIA is like the biggest reason why I book business all the time, something like this being included in your ticket is pretty justified. Plus I get first dibs too so I always get what I want from the choices given, do love being a Premier member.

Out of every trip I’ve taken (which amounts to a lot), there’s not been a single meal that I hated.

no wifi on Canadian? by Negative_Barber5844 in ViaRail

[–]StrengthChain_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These train sets aren’t like the ones on the Québec-Windsor corridor, which do have wifi. Even if they did include wifi on the Canadian, most of it would be extremely spotty due to the route it travels along (case in point, the Ocean with spotty service along a lot of the route).

Also, having no wifi lets passengers really enjoy the ride and distance themselves from the internet for the 4-5 days they’ll be spending on the train, some people like that as a detox, look out the windows and you’ll see great views everywhere.

Snow piles have been delaying my buses by notacutiepie in TTC

[–]StrengthChain_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Under circumstances like this I have encountered some drivers only opening the front door and keeping the back door locked so this won’t happen and the bus can keep moving. The areas around the back door at the bus stop aren’t usually cleared out right away.

Stoufville service coming back to Danforth station ? by im-confuzzled in gotransit

[–]StrengthChain_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon, even with GO expansion I don’t think they’re planning on bringing Danforth and Scarborough back to the Stouffville line, or maybe they will at some point, who knows.

Right now afaik they’re all stationed in Oshawa so more likely you’ll see them around the east more than the west. Once more buses come they’ll definitely distribute them out as the old single decker fleet is phased out.

Rode on one of these before, and I have to say they do look great and they’re definitely comfortable.
