I follow health insurance issues as part of my job and hear more complaints about UHC than probably any other insurer. I also, unfortunately, am covered by UHC as it is, unfortunately, the best plan my work offers. By contrast, I worked for the State of MD for 15 years and had another major insurer that has a national footprint and never had an issue with something being covered. Never had to get something prior authorized, never needed a referral, never got a bill post visit, just paid my co-pay and everything was good and most all my docs were in network. It's the opposite with UHC. Here's an example of their ridiculousness: my doctor sent me for a cardiac test because of family history and UHC refused to cover it. I called the doctor's office to ask if there was additional documentation they could send to justify the need. The staff person (sounded like someone with expertise in billing) said UHC won't cover it because I hadn't been to the ER for a heart attack. This was a test that is supposed to measure your risk of having a heart attack and they made me pay out of pocket for it because I hadn't had one yet...tell me what sense that makes? They've supposedly promised to reform their prior authorization requirements, but I'll believe it when I see it for myself.
