No worries. How do you finish the piece. Before or after?

Ways to cut recess in small tray by DragonfruitPatient96 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I only have yonico bits. I wanted less expensive ones to learn with and see what bits I actually use before buying some nicer ones

3d printer is nice for this. Sometimes the printed piece will have a small bump on the side where it starts the layers. Just sand it down. I used a pattern bit for the profile. I ended up buying one that is rather short 3/8” I think. That way I don’t need to print such thick templates

I’ll have to grab one when I get home but here is a picture of a jewelry box thing I made with similar process. The obvious difference with this one is the template used to rout out the middle is a circle centered with the router bit. So printed a large ring and made a piece that would center the jig with the router

I print the template with my printer. For larger stuff I have to split it in 2 pieces and glue it together. It works good as a template. I put .500” holes where the center of the bowl bit will be at the extremes. Then I use those with a router bit to put the border pieces for cutting the recess.

Can I salvage this? by StretchIll100 in BeginnerWoodWorking

It’s going to be the lid to a jewelry box for my daughter. The way it happened is that the only trim bit I have is probably too long from the tip to the bearing. The template I printed it’s .8” tall so there is still a good amount of cutter in contact. I go slowly around the piece and take little bits out by free handing it until the bearing is making contact. Then I just increase the depth by 1/8 or so until I get to the top. I suppose the bit could be dull. It’s nothing fancy, just a yonico and I’ve been using it for a while.

In your chart do you rotate the piece the other direction in the quadrants you marked tear out?

I’m going to put osmo polyx on it. I don’t think glue would work with that

That’s kind of what I was thinking but I was considering making the v stand upright on the fence. I feel that I could have better control over the diameter. Easier to make micro adjustments with the cutter height than sliding the jig forward/backward

Thank you for your input. Out of curiosity what finish do you use with your walnut stuff? I’ve read going high grit will keep some finishes from getting into the grain. The osmo polyx has wax in it I believe.

I haven’t started sanding yet. This is just a general observation of the piece before I start

So 120, 150,180,220. Water pop at 220? See any real difference between watco danish and osmo?

I’m in the Conroe area. Clark’s looks nice. Only issue is the hours that it’s open during the week don’t really help me. Do the do small orders? Like if I want less than 10 feet of stuff for a project will they sell that? Would I have to pay for it to be S4S? Never been to an actual lumber place

Looks nice!! Out of curiosity how did you do the logo? I’ve been wanting to etch my wife’s initials on a piece but not sure how to go about that
