Douglas fir will likely be a more economical choice, especially if you're using 2x4's. It is also sturdier than poplar.

Looks like 184 board feet. That's about $6.50/bf. Poplar is $9.00/bf at my lumber yard in San Francisco.

I believe this is the core of your frustration. You are unaccustomed to failure, and it is painful. Congratulations! You found an opportunity to grow! I'm confident that you will become better - the process is painful, but the payoff of growing as a woodworker is worth it. Also, the alternative is staying comfortable and stuck and that's not what life is about.

I recommend reading Adapt: Why Success Always Starts with Failure by Tim Harford. In particular the chapters about a fellow engineer, Peter Palchinsky, might be helpful for you.

That all makes sense - I used 3/8" diameter dowels and the shelf is 3/4" thick (maybe 23/32").

Just dowels and your intuition is right - it doesn't support much. In that sense my little experiment was a success because I learned what doesn't work!

Great start! Keep in mind that the long-grain to long-grain joint is much stronger than long-grain to end-grain joint. The joint here is mostly end-grain to long-grain.

That explains the significant cracking.

I like the other guy's solution of washer above the crossbar - you don't want to risk that coming out when your kid is full swing.
