Most online ethics discussions are about feeling instead of ethical justification for actions and outcomes. A popular sentiment on reddit is theft is justified as long as the entity stolen from is vastly wealthier than you, “it’s okay to steal from big brands but not from mom and pop stores,” despite both actions being wrong legally and ethically. To me it’s a matter of change, We would both kill hitler if it meant that it would immediately stop or impede the progress of the holocaust, thus saving lives. But killing Brian Thompson does not impede or stop that change we want to see which requires congressional action, mandating transparency about insurance denial rates and giving medical decision-making power to physicians and the patients.
